Blurb – Tau Scorpii
When Taryn rescues another human from a marauding band of Caeruleum, she is reunited with clansmen long believed dead. It puts her at odds with their new chieftan, as well as her own partner, a powerful privateer. They discover, they have a more imminent problem, and must unite to survive.
The weather is changing. They’ll have to fight other species for control as migrations begin, food becomes scarce, and border wars erupt across the territories. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.
Tau Scorpii A, a massive red giant star in a binary cluster with Tau Scorpii B, a yellow dwarf. The solar system is populated by more than thirty planets, at least one habitable. Called Sedna by the SolTerrans that live there, named for a planet in their ancestral system. The desert is a dangerous place for alien species – and on Sedna, they’re all alien species.

This week, I’ve got a bit of insight into the world where my characters live, and a peek at their history. Asher and Taryn are rehashing an old conversation, this time with spectators. Garrett, Ianto, and Skye, and they are listening carefully. Please remember, this is a first draft. Editing will happen!

“We’ve been trying to rediscover some of the technologies our ancestors had, when they were dropped planetside,” Taryn translated. “Steam power isn’t practical, because we have so little water. The fact may be, this planet was chosen to keep us in a primitive state, for whatever reason. I’ve read diaries left by the first generation of our ancestors on Sedna. We weren’t helpless, we had some of the technologies that lead to travel between the stars.”
Asher made a disgruntled snort. “She doesn’t stop to wonder, if these stories are pure fantasy from the imagination of the traumatized.”
“There are ruins, parts of cities, scooped up and deposited here.”
“Have you ever seen one?”
“You know I haven’t. You’ve seen the artifacts in your own archives. Someday I’m going to pack up and go south to look for myself.”

Maybe some actual PG-rated ‘R’ next week. Maybe. Or some Bloodlines. Both are going now, it’s Full Tilt Boogie in the word program.
PS – this computer was new in November. I had to install my own word program. How rude is that??
Anyway. Nothing is on sale this week, but feel free to buy/review if you’re so inclined. Comments are always appreciated.
This is the constellation Scorpius, and the real Tau Scorpii, Al Niyat, just to the right of Antares. I can see it from my front door on clear nights.
This reminds me a lot of Anne McCaffrey’s Pern. But I like the twist of them “trying to keep us primitive”. Great snippet, S.A. 🙂

It’s been 40 years since I read those – I need to get some of her books on my Kindle.

It reminded me of Pern, too. Glad I’m not the only one!

Really like the line about being kept primitive 🙂

I’m always utterly fascinated by people on planets trying to recover remnants from their collective past! Unlike someone commenting above, it didn’t remind me of Pern (although I love those books and the fact that we the readers ‘know’ more about their past than they do) but just caught my interest on its own merits and I want to know more of course. Great snippet!

I love that one considers it all to be nonsense and a flight of fancy. I wonder what they’ll find in the cities.

Lovely descriptive snippet – I too was reminded a little of Pern, but I think this is going in a different direction!

Doesn’t Asher know there’s often some truth in legends? Great excerpt.
