WeWriWa 11/25/18

Holidays make me forget what day of the week it is.  Luckily, the tv was on, and the wrong programs were showing up for a Friday night.  It’s Saturday, duuuh.

So, check out Snippet Sunday & WeWriWa for entertaining blog posts and fantastic snippets from some amazing authors.

Let’s see, I need an entertaining and fantastic snippet now . . .

Blurb – Tau Scorpii

TS1_cover2cz

When Taryn rescues another human from a marauding band of Caeruleum, she is reunited with clansmen long believed dead. It puts her at odds with their new chieftan, as well as her own partner, a powerful privateer. They discover, they have a more imminent problem, and must unite to survive.

The weather is changing. They’ll have to fight other species for control as migrations begin, food becomes scarce, and border wars erupt across the territories. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

Tau Scorpii A, a massive red giant star in a binary cluster with Tau Scorpii B, a yellow dwarf. The solar system is populated by more than thirty planets, at least one habitable. Called Sedna by the SolTerrans that live there, named for a planet in their ancestral system. The desert is a dangerous place for alien species – and on Sedna, they’re all alien species.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Our heroes are going out in the wilds, to see if there is anything to see.  Of course, it’s not that simple.  Sometimes, they don’t know who is the more dangerous enemy – the other species on Sedna, or the planet itself.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Fine,” Taryn announced, getting annoyed quickly. “Flatrock goes north over four hundred miles, and east, over a hundred and eighty, or so we’ve been told. No one from Freeport has gone across it since we’ve been a village, so maybe it goes on for a thousand miles, or ten thousand. Find your way back without me.” It was a challenge, not a threat, and they looked around for a few moments, pointing in different directions, Taryn shaking her head. “You’re both wrong, I told you, it’s easy to get lost up here.”

Is that how you ended up at Highmarch?” Garrett asked smugly.

Yes, it is, and I’ve ridden the paths here for years. It’s not exactly flat, but it has few landmarks.

Great,” Skye muttered, as the wind started again.

Naturally, the plot thickens.  I have no idea when this will be an actual book, springtime is looking good for it.  While you’re waiting, I have a post-apocalyptic series that will be wrapping up with book 3, in a few weeks.  They are on sale at Amazon right now, FYI.

The Wildblood – No one remembers what started the war, the big one. Civilization stopped, and what came next was fueled by rage and fear.

Twenty years on, a tiny refuge, a place called The Vista, may be one of the last vestiges of humanity. Isolated, guarded, and hiding a dark secret, the people have survived World War Last, and they are content with that. Their children, however, are not. The search for others will send them out into a world they know nothing about, where the line between enemy and ally is blurred.

I missed a week, sorry about that. Writing. You know how that goes.

This is a bit further into the book, where Team Three are meeting people they weren’t even certain were real. Urban legends make the rounds, even after WW3. You’ve heard that saying – Be careful what you wish for. Not a final draft, so subject to revisions. Or, the dreaded ‘Delete’ button, if it really annoys me. So far, so good.

Bloodlines: Book 3 of The Wildblood, autumn 2017!

“Both of my biological parents were Altered,” Kaden told them what they suspected, what they couldn’t prove.

Shannon resisted the urge to look at Mac. He’d been right about offspring, and genetics, all along.

“And that is the single reason some Altered are called The Sixth, but where the name originated is anyone’s guess.” DeTessa gestured gracefully, and Shan wondered if anything she did was uncoordinated, or unsteady. “It eventually came to be associated with the clansmen that keep the status quo along the trade routes, the ones descended from Altered.”

“A Sixth would have Altered parents,” Wade repeated, for clarity.

“The majority of The Sixth, being children of Altered, were also Wildblood, one lending to the other,” DeTessa surmised for them.

Putting a hand up, Shan steadied herself on Kaden’s shoulder, closing her eyes for a moment. For clarity.

Aha! I see what I did there! It’s taken me one novella, two full novels, and now a third, a quarter million words, to get here. I don’t know how Stephen King and GRRM do it. So, links to books. These are to Amazon but they’re available at all the major publishers & as paperbacks. Go to my website by clicking the first picture.

Thank you all for reading.

This week, I’m going to wander back to the beginning of The Wildblood series and post a snippet from the prequel novella, Backlash.  This is a group of officers discussing their newest rookie, Shannon.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

So are you taking your Scout out tomorrow?” Ballentyne, Mick in his off-duty time, peered down from the second floor loft, making his point to the younger officers.

Is she ready to drive around by herself?” Wade asked.

She’s been ready all summer.”

We haven’t been ready,” Mac said, not joking.

Give her the keys, tell her she’s on regular rotation with us,” Wade told Ballentyne.

Are you sure?” Mac asked quietly, keeping the conversation private.

I should’ve put her on the road the week she turned sixteen, but I’d have had her parents and you to deal with. How she didn’t make Ballentyne crazy over the summer is beyond me,” Wade revealed. “You want to keep her at rookie status another season? She drives you around in the mountains next, starting tomorrow.”

Backlash is available free on Instafreebie, if you’d like to sign up for my newsletter, or it’s available as a paperback or ebook through my website.

Book 3 of the series is in rough draft, and the first two – The Vista & Renegades, are available now, again, check my website for your choice of format.

The Wildblood Series

No one remembers what started the war, the big one. It happened too fast, and there were too many lies, for the truth to be known. Civilization stopped, and what came next was fueled by rage and fear.

Isolated, guarded, and hiding a dark secret, the people have survived World War Last, and they are content with that. Their children, however, are not. Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood – Autumn 2016

Garden of the gods

Here Again

I’ve been horrible at keeping up on social media the past few weeks.  Editing is occupying all my waking moments.  The good news is, Renegades will be released soon.  Autumn, this year.  The other good news is – The Wildblood series is going to print!

Wooo!  I actually have a copy – a real, live paperback – of Backlash.  It’s so cool.  It’s also available through Amazon.  The Vista will be following along shortly, and of course, Renegades.

As for other projects, there is a SFR creeping around the corner, demanding I let it out.  More on that, as it moves along.

I’ve also been playing with the idea of novellas in The Wildblood universe.  There are so many stories.  We’ll see.

That’s it.  I have to hit the books again.  Plus, go pet my shiny new paperback.

Pre-release Party!

So, I’m missing the WeWriWa this weekend, for a lot of reasons, reasons that would bore you.  I am inviting everyone over to Facebook, for my Pre-release Party of Hunter’s Moon.  There will be games, silliness, and giveaways.  Stop on by, and if you’re interested, I still have times available for authors to host.

I’ll be back next week with something not boring.

New Release!

Hunter’s Moon

by S. A. Hoag

Lyra Alexander considers herself an archeologist, a job that normally wouldn’t be very dramatic or dangerous. The problem with her job, however, is that she studies vampires. And they aren’t too keen on being studied.

In this world, there are all kinds of creatures prowling in the night . . . Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

excerpt

“You don’t look so great,” Tegan says as we whip down the highway. He has a lead foot. A new white Mustang convertible, top down, sun high in the sky, temperatures hovering near the comfortable zone, it’s almost a perfect day.

There was dirt road for close to twenty miles, then two lanes of old blacktop for a few more, and finally what I suppose could be considered a real road. My motion sickness has been here for the entire ride, and I think I’m on my last nerve.

“Lyra?”

“I didn’t get any sleep last night. Or the night before,” I tell him flatly. “I’m like that when there are vampires around.”

“If you were in any real danger, do you think I’d have left you alone?” He glances over.

“Don’t you do what they tell you? Isn’t your job to keep me in line?”

He snorts a swear word under his breath.

“And what in the hell is ‘real danger’?” I point out. “There are vampires and . . .” I glance sideways at him, stuttering off the word before I say it.

“Werewolves?” he grins, finishing the thought for me. It’s a derogatory term.

” . . . out there and humans are too ignorant to see how fragile their place on this planet really is.”

“You see them. You know.”

“I know vampires.” All too well. “Shapeshifters,” I shrug.

“You do know, I’m a shapeshifter.” He isn’t threatening me, but it comes off sounding like something I didn’t want to hear anyway.

Of course.”

“How did you know?” he asks. It’s an honest question. When you spend god-knows how many years masquerading as something you’re not, it pays to find the little details you might miss.

“Body temperature.”

“Ah the one thing I can’t change,” he nods. “Now, did you know, or did your brother tell you?”

“I knew. We did get pretty damned close. Morgan told me what ‘Samael’ means.”

“Did it scare you?” he asks, amused. He gets a lot of free entertainment at my expense.

  “No,” I lie.

Author Info

I knew before I got to high school that I wanted to write books. I did, too, dozens of short stories I thought someday I’d turn into novels. Oh, how I wish I had those spiral notebooks full of wild ideas and teenage musings.

I still have the ideas from many of those stories – some of them make me cringe. There are always new ideas too. Some are amazing, some are just silly. A few will become something more as I add books to my list of those that are published.

For now, I live in the desert and many nights, in between writing and sleep, you can find me out watching the stars. It’s dark, out here in the desert and I can see so many stars that weren’t there before. I make time to write now. The tiny seeds of stories demand that I write them down.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy creating them.

WeWriWa #8Sunday

First, I must sing the kudos of a wonderful site that has led me to some great books and amazing authors. Check it out, leave some comments. Authors thrive on comments. And coffee.

My 8, from the prequel novella to ‘The Vista’ I need to be thinking of a title for. This has a nice little romance in it, I swear. I’m just not comfortable with posting those bits quite yet. Soon.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Shan felt as if time slowed, stuttered around her. She tried to look up, feeling the air itself pulsing around her as something massive blocked out the sun.

Ghosts, Wade knew but it was too late to tell them. He was watching the road and it was before Team Sixteen left the depot. The roar of it was deafening; he could hear it because she could.

“Don’t touch her,” Mac warned, seeing her gaze go fixed on things they couldn’t see. Taylor was waving at them frantically. “They’ve never done it at the same time,” he exhaled sharply, alarmed as the situation spiraled completely out of control in that moment.

WeWriWa #8Sunday

First off, here’s the link to more #8Sunday blogs. Check ’em out; I know I love comments.

91e18-wewriwa_button

Now, my 8. The is from the prequel novella to ‘The Vista’, tentatively called ‘The Blackout’. ‘The Vista’ is due for release this month, the novella sometime this summer. Both are sci-fi post-apocalyptic action-adventures with a dash of romance. Yep, something for everyone!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

‘The Blackout’ excerpt by S. A. Hoag

“Even if you didn’t contribute anything that goes on between us,” Shan tapped her temple, “Here, I’d want you there for the support because we never know what the hell could happen.” She was on the verge of anger. “That’s not the case. When you’re close, it’s easier for me to sense things. Maybe you’re a catalyst, maybe it’s just because I trust you and Wade without questioning why.” Taking a breath, she added, “If you think you’re not important to the team, you’re just wrong.”

He wrapped an arm around her shoulders. It wasn’t easy to cuddle in tactical gear, but Mac made the effort.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I’m not really certain about the structure of the first sentence. It may need to be two. Thoughts on that are appreciated.

See you next weekend.

WeWriWa #8Sunday

This is 8 sentences from the WIP prequel to ‘The Vista’. It’s leaning much more towards the romance than the action adventure, even if these 8 don’t show it. My thought is, the events of ‘The Vista’ would have happened entirely differently if Shannon didn’t love Mac and visa versa. I’m hoping this prequel gives a little insight to why the main characters are they way they are.

And now – 8 sentences from ‘The Vista: Blackout’ (working title, I hope I come up with something else).

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

He switched over to the station’s com system. “This is Duncan, I need qualified Dispatchers on the floor now.”

“Sir, I’m fine . . . “ Shannon began.

“You’re not being relieved; you’re considered a secondary team. I want you patrolling the boundary of The Vista a minute after your replacement is here. You’re not cleared to leave the city, Officer Allen. Tonight, a whole class of rookies are going to make sure no one sneaks into The Vista. In this case, it is absolutely not better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission – do you understand me?”
