Gethyon Cover Reveal

Abandoned. Hunted. Out of control.

Gethyon Rees had always felt at odds with the universe, and hoped for an escape among the stars. But discovering he has the ability to cross time and space with just a thought brings more problems than it solves: a deadly bounty hunter who can follow him anywhere, the unwelcome return of Tarquin Secker—the mother who abandoned him—and an ancient darkness that seeks him and all those with his talents.

When an unforgivable act sets him on the run, it’ll take more than his unearthly powers to save his skin and the lives of those he cares about. It’ll take a sacrifice he never expected to have to make.

A science fiction adventure novel previously published by BURST (Champagne Books), and part of the Travellers Universe. A 2014 SFR Galaxy Award Winner for Most Awesome Psychic Talent and a 2015 EPIC eBook Awards finalist in the Science Fiction category. Also now includes the SF short story The Bones of the Sea.

“With colorful worlds full of nuance and dimension, characters that walk off the page, and themes that anyone who has been either parent or child can relate to.” J.C. Cassels, author of The Black Wing Chronicles series

“This fast-paced, gripping ride zips through time and space, love and loss, rebellion and acceptance.” Anna McLain, SFR Galaxy Award judge

Gethyon stumbled and fell. Light burst across his vision, a violent assault of color, and he threw up an arm to defend himself. Something brushed against him, spun him, and then another bruising impact sent him backward.

“Watch where you’re going,” someone scolded.

Gethyon dropped his arm and squinted, fighting to keep his balance. People flowed around him, but the man who’d spoken was already moving away, a reproving frown on his face.

Soft sunlight gleamed from smooth marble, a blend of gray, green, and white beneath his feet. Humans bustled in different directions, each intent on their own concerns, with only the odd, inquisitive glance thrown his way as he stood, alone and bewildered, in their midst. He faced a distant horizon framed by the jagged spires of mountains. To either side of where he stood, the mountains ran in tooth-like bronze spines. The plaza seemed to be a main pedestrian thoroughfare in the middle of a wide valley. He stared. Where was he?

“Hey!”

Gethyon dragged his head around toward the speaker, forcing his eyes to focus. Buildings in the same pastel marble filled the valley ahead. Cold shock drenched him at the sight of two uniformed men between him and the nearest edifice, one warden aiming a finger straight at him.

“Hey, no unauthorized teleportation in the plaza!”

Gethyon turned and ran. Shouts from behind told him pursuit followed. He dodged between the idling crowds, staggering as his legs quivered.

What happened?

He’d done it again—sent himself elsewhere—but how? And why could he do it? What was he?

SFR Brigade Showcase – Aug. 2016

SFRB-ShowcaseBanner

August already!  I know this is supposed to be about Romance, but – have you seen all the science headlines about genetic engineering and genetic memory??  I’m not a geneticist or anything close, but I just have to say, the outline for The Wildblood series was written in 1998.  FYI.  Now, on to other things.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

How about a Cover Reveal! And a snippet, of course. Here we find Shannon and Hunter wandering around Kansas, seeing the sights while they wait for the rest of the caravan. You never know what you’ll find, in the middle of Nowhere.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“I’m sure there’s a collapsed barn, or something exciting, over here,” he teased. There were a group of buildings, probably a farm, and mostly overgrown. They rode on. “This far enough away from a city of any real size, I’d think it was the plague that got them,” Hunter said quietly.

“Or marauders. I remember, more than once or twice, in The Vista. One of my earliest memories was hiding at the hospital. One of the inner rooms, with no windows. We’d sit and wait and it seemed like forever.”

“Or they went some place safer.”

Dismounting, she walked a bit, getting a feel for the place. “I hope so.”

“I know what you’re doing.”

“Good. I don’t expect anything spectacular, or complicated. You know the routine.” Mostly, to watch her back, in case she got distracted by the tiniest details she would pick up, details that would go unnoticed by others.

“There’s a lot of old farm equipment sitting here,” he indicated along what had been the driveway, half-concealed by underbrush and time.

Shan walked farther out, pulling away the weeds, wandering around it to get a better look.

“Do you plan on dragging it back to Montana?” Hunter asked. “For a souvenir?”

“I don’t think this is farm equipment.”

“So what? We need to head back soon.” He followed her anyway.

Stripping as much debris away as she could, Shan stepped back and stared.

“Oh, Capt. Allen, now you’ve done it,” he said, with a sudden and growing concern.

Now, I never said I was going to tell you what they found! Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood will be available this autumn. The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood and Backlash, prequel to The Wildblood series are both available now.

Hunter’s Moon

by S. A. Hoag

Lyra Alexander considers herself an archeologist, a job that normally wouldn’t be very dramatic or dangerous. The problem with her job, however, is that she studies vampires. And they aren’t too keen on being studied.

In this world, there are all kinds of creatures prowling in the night . . . Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

excerpt

“You don’t look so great,” Tegan says as we whip down the highway. He has a lead foot. A new white Mustang convertible, top down, sun high in the sky, temperatures hovering near the comfortable zone, it’s almost a perfect day.

There was dirt road for close to twenty miles, then two lanes of old blacktop for a few more, and finally what I suppose could be considered a real road. My motion sickness has been here for the entire ride, and I think I’m on my last nerve.

“Lyra?”

“I didn’t get any sleep last night. Or the night before,” I tell him flatly. “I’m like that when there are vampires around.”

“If you were in any real danger, do you think I’d have left you alone?” He glances over.

“Don’t you do what they tell you? Isn’t your job to keep me in line?”

He snorts a swear word under his breath.

“And what in the hell is ‘real danger’?” I point out. “There are vampires and . . .” I glance sideways at him, stuttering off the word before I say it.

“Werewolves?” he grins, finishing the thought for me. It’s a derogatory term.

” . . . out there and humans are too ignorant to see how fragile their place on this planet really is.”

“You see them. You know.”

“I know vampires.” All too well. “Shapeshifters,” I shrug.

“You do know, I’m a shapeshifter.” He isn’t threatening me, but it comes off sounding like something I didn’t want to hear anyway.

Of course.”

“How did you know?” he asks. It’s an honest question. When you spend god-knows how many years masquerading as something you’re not, it pays to find the little details you might miss.

“Body temperature.”

“Ah the one thing I can’t change,” he nods. “Now, did you know, or did your brother tell you?”

“I knew. We did get pretty damned close. Morgan told me what ‘Samael’ means.”

“Did it scare you?” he asks, amused. He gets a lot of free entertainment at my expense.

  “No,” I lie.

I knew before I got to high school that I wanted to write books. I did, too, dozens of short stories I thought someday I’d turn into novels. Oh, how I wish I had those spiral notebooks full of wild ideas and teenage musings.

I still have the ideas from many of those stories – some of them make me cringe. There are always new ideas too. Some are amazing, some are just silly. A few will become something more as I add books to my list of those that are published.

For now, I live in the desert and many nights, in between writing and sleep, you can find me out watching the stars. It’s dark, out here in the desert and I can see so many stars that weren’t there before. I make time to write now. The tiny seeds of stories demand that I write them down.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy creating them.

Cover Reveal!! Introducing Backlash

Cover Reveal! Here it is!

Backlash is the prequel novella to The Wildblood series by S. A. Hoag. Set on a near-future Earth mostly devoid of humans, this reveals some of the harsh realities facing people of The Vista, and how Team Three began.

Blurb

Before Team Three became Team Three, there was The Blackout.

Vista Security is used to the feral bands of human wandering the landscape since a brief and devastating war wiped away civilization. Sixteen years later, they’ve adapted to dealing with the challenges facing their safe haven.

That is, until a new threat appears, one they never expected and one they have little defense against. Security throws in everything they can muster; it quickly takes a toll. Their advantage – an untested team of officers barely more than children themselves; officers with dark secrets and a hidden agenda.

In a free-for-all battle to preserve one of the last sanctuaries of man, Team Three discovers their secrets are their strength and that their future will take them far beyond what they’ve ever known.

Action, a bit of romance and a good splash of sci-fi set the scene for Backlash, the prequel novella of The Wildblood series.

“Code 15, six miles north,” Mac answered.

“Negative on the Code 15,” Dispatch came back. “No tow available.”

“It’s going to be damn dark by the time we walk in,” Shan pointed out.

“There are some new houses about a mile over there,” Mac told her. “We push this dead beast off the road in to cover, get our gear and camp there until they can send someone around in the morning.”

“Good enough,” she said, gathering her belongings.

“Central Dispatch, we’re going to get in cover on Aspen Park Drive until daybreak. Put us in for a Code 15 then, if you would.”

“First thing after curfew,” Dispatch said.

“Let our families know we’re just stranded.”

“Will do.”

It took them half an hour to get the car into the trees and hike over the hill to the line of houses being
built. A few were nearly finished and they picked one in the middle of the block. After a quick perimeter check, they hauled their gear inside and began setting up for the night.

“Pick a room and get the windows covered,” Mac directed, finding a corner to prop an AK in. He locked the door and started arranging their gear. It would get cold overnight, but not dangerously so. The solar disc heater would stave off the chill.

“This one is as good as any,” she said, dropping her pack and setting her AK down while she tacked up the heavy curtains folded neatly beneath the window. He came in behind her and closed the door. “Did you bring anything to read?”

“Always,” he said. They never knew when they’d need temporary entertainment. Books were the preferred choice. The heater would give off enough light. The radio, considering a blackout, was likely pointless but if anything happened, they needed to know. “Hungry?” he wondered, unrolling his sleeping bag.

“I’m not.” She wasn’t and wouldn’t get that way until they were back in The Vista. Wound up and ready, with no place to go.

“Don’t pace, Shan. Sit down, relax, use the few hours you get of free time.”

“Okay, Mom. I don’t like being stuck out here.”

“No shit. I might never have known that if you didn’t say so.”

“Smart ass.” She arranged her bedroll next to his, tucking a blanket in the bottom and fluffing the small, flat pillow by beating on it. Then she settled in, digging a book out of her pack.

“Herbert,” Mac said, revealing the author without telling her which book.

“Asimov,” she countered.

“I’ll raise you a Bradbury.”

“I’ve got . . .” she went through the various items carefully packed away for such an emergency. “A pack of dice, some sugar cubes.” Shan pulled a stray book out. “Ah-ha! Zane Gray.”

“Really?” Mac asked. “Trade me.”

Welcome to Peaceville, population 2067 and rising…from the grave…

Luke Chester has had enough. An overdose of his mom’s tranquilizers and a stomach full of whiskey should solve all his problems…

But they don’t. Instead, Luke finds himself booted out of the afterlife for not dying a natural death, with nowhere to go but back to his recently vacated corpse and reality. How the hell is he going to pass for one of the living without someone trying to blow his brains out for being one of the undead?

And it just gets worse. He’s got to fight his own desperate craving to consume the living, evade the weird supernatural hunter who’s having a field day with the new undeads rising, and there’s this creepy black shadow following him around. WeWriWa #8Sunday

First, I must sing the kudos of a wonderful site that has led me to some great books and amazing authors. Check it out, leave some comments. Authors thrive on comments. And coffee.

91e18-wewriwa_button

My 8, from the prequel novella to ‘The Vista’ I need to be thinking of a title for. This has a nice little romance in it, I swear. I’m just not comfortable with posting those bits quite yet. Soon.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Shan felt as if time slowed, stuttered around her. She tried to look up, feeling the air itself pulsing around her as something massive blocked out the sun.

Ghosts, Wade knew but it was too late to tell them. He was watching the road and it was before Team Sixteen left the depot. The roar of it was deafening; he could hear it because she could.

“Don’t touch her,” Mac warned, seeing her gaze go fixed on things they couldn’t see. Taylor was waving at them frantically. “They’ve never done it at the same time,” he exhaled sharply, alarmed as the situation spiraled completely out of control in that moment.

And now, for something completely the same! Available now at Amazon. Yes, my name is wrong on this cover; it was a finalist, not ~the~ cover however. You can click on it to go to Amazon if you’re so inclined.

Evolution of a Book Cover – Final

I found it fascinating how a book cover evolved from ideas in my head into a custom, hand-drawn bit of art. Joe Kawano talked me through the process (he must have a lot of patience!). Graphics ahead. Oh, Amazon link first, then pictures.

{{{[[‘The Vista’ Amazon Page]]}}} – Buy it here!

First draft –

TheVista_firstsketch_01a

Joe made it clear this was not how the finished cover would look. I must have sounded freaked out by the entire process. I was.

Second draft –

VistaSketch-01 (2)

Things were taking shape. Naturally, I was also buried in the complicated mess that happens the first time you try to get a book online. Then this happened.

Third draft –

cover_03

Needless to say, this was pretty exciting. I’d read may things about online book selling, and a custom cover seems to be a big plus for marketing. Holidays rolled around and things slowed down for both of us. I got this gem in my email one morning.

cover_almost_there

If Joe didn’t live 2000 miles away, I’m certain he could have heard me wailing like a banshee. Or something.

Xample02-partDone-Upper-R-Quarter-C Xample03-partDone-Lower-R-Quarter-C

I’m pretty sure I squee’d like a fangirl. No, that’s not a real word. Than more slow torture showed up in my email, almost daily.

Xample04-PartDone-UpperLeft-Corner-A-raw Xample04-PartDone-UpperLeft-Corner-b&w

And then this.

More tweaking.

Finally, we worked around to this.

And now for some PR.

Blurb – ‘The Vista’ by S. A. Hoag

Team Three has a secret, one they think they’ve kept from all but a select few colleagues. They couldn’t be more wrong.

Allen, MacKenzie and Wade are Vista Security’s top officers, part of the first generation post-World War 3. They’ve trained all their lives to survive and thrive in a cold, hostile world. Their secret – they believe they are genetically enhanced and are unquestionably connected psychically. Hidden away in an enclave in the Rocky Mountains, they’re also at the forefront of the movement to see what’s left of the outside world. Not everyone in The Vista is as eager to venture forth.

As they attempt to learn the truth, their mere presence makes them targets of a vicious renegade with the means to destroy everything they know. Facing exile or worse, Team Three has short time to figure out who is enemy, who is friend and how to save their home and themselves.

The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood series takes place in the near-future where the Earth has been nearly emptied of human beings by a short and devastating world war. Venturing beyond the safety of their valley may be the best move Security has ever made; it’s absolutely the most dangerous.

The Evolution of a Book Cover

With my first novel getting close to being online, I had to figure out a few things – the cover being an important issue. Having scrolled through hundreds of books in the same genre I noticed a lot of stock covers in use and knew I didn’t want that. A fabulous internet friend (hi EJ!) who happens to be a couple books ahead of me on the internet learning curve has offer invaluable advice. She said a custom cover was the way to go.

After a bit of research I connected with an artist, Joe Kawano. We emailed, we did some PMs, and things got moving. This is the very first sketch.

TheVista_firstsketch_01a

Joe made sure to explain how the process progresses and that this was a mock-up for him to work from. The finished cover would look pretty much nothing like this.

Stage Two!

cover_02

After some personal glitches on both ends and getting through the holidays, we got around to some more PMs and polishing the details.

cover_03 Woman-With-Gun-04

This Monday, I received an email from Joe with this picture attached. He is taunting me!

cover_almost_there

So very close. In the meantime I’ve been lining up the other things I need to get this project finished. If I have any advice to offer as a first-time novelist or to anyone new to publishing online, I’d say do your research. Find out what’s involved. Get ahead of yourself. Do the ‘impossible’. I should have gotten to some of the details sooner, but I didn’t know. You can learn something new every day.

‘The Vista’ is almost a reality now. While I’ve been concentrating on this, I’ve also got the rough draft of a prequel about half finished. It will be a novella and promises a few surprises. So, let me introduce you to the world of ‘The Vista’.

Excerpt from ‘The Vista’

A storm moved in after nightfall, the rain almost ice as it fell from a black sky. No thunder, sparse lightning and that was the worst part of it – the broken, eerie silence between downpours. Shannon didn’t like being in the city for any reason. Twice a week, four months a year she was anyway. It was her job. They might say ghosts weren’t real, but most of ‘them’ had never spent a night in the long dead place. Sometime after midnight, she gave in and headed for home.

Crossing the Continental Divide, the rain turned to snow, huge white flakes splattering on the windshield and not melting. The road was mostly clear. Static on Shannon’s radio was thick, but moments later, she understood two words. Code Seven. Active aggressive incident outside the outer perimeter, but active aggressive still. She kicked it into overdrive and came down the mountain full tilt, pushing the car and pushing her luck on a road known to devour Scouts.

Then the outer marker merely went ‘blip’ as she passed it. If there was an alert, proximity warnings would have gone off all over Security. Alarms should be sounding in Dispatch and her car. She stared at the radio for a moment, realizing what she had stumbled in to.

Wargames. The call-out wasn’t real.
