SFRB Showcase July 2016!

The banner takes you right to the place to find all kinds of amazing authors and their offerings for July.  Check it out.  Not only are they talented writers, they’ve gotten me through a lots of bumps in the road to publishing, and surviving after publishing.

On to a snippet.  I’ve rewritten this scene a few times, and while I can’t guarantee it’s done being tweaked, I think it is.  So for something completely different, I’m going to post the snippet, with my personal thoughts interjected in parenthesis.  This is really how my brain works.  you’ve been warned.

Hunter and Shannon have a reunion, about halfway through Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood.  Read the bold lines first, that’s the actual snippet.  Reread.  My smarmy comments are in italics.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You’re not wearing body armor,” Hunter observed.

(Did you really think he wouldn’t notice that??)

She glared at him, dropping her canteen and clamping her mouth shut instead of saying something rude.

(You’re so lucky she didn’t punch you.  She’s twenty, for god’s sake.  Her hormones are running amok.)

He knew that look. “And you’re pissed at me. Because I kissed you?”

(I was right, you really are clueless.)

For a moment, Shan was astonished. “You think that’s why I’m angry?” She put her hands on her hips, only accentuating the fact she was mad, and that she wasn’t wearing body armor.

Apparently, no. What did I do wrong?” Hunter asked, leery.

(Oh, Hunter, you silly, silly man.)

You could have asked me to come with you, when you left Estes Park.”

(You’re not paying enough attention, Hunter.  You should run now.)

You told me not to.”

(See previous statement.)

I might have alluded to it. The point is, you should have asked.” Shan was frustrated. He wasn’t like the other men she knew, the ones she’d grown up around. She had no trouble expressing herself to the select few of Team Three’s inner circle, or talking them in to things.

There was no winning the argument, he knew from past experience. “What about Mac?” he expressed his own frustration.

(Noooooooooo!!  You did not just say that!)

Mac?” she repeated, puzzled.

(It’s OK, Shan.  He’s clueless.)

Tall guy. Wears a cowboy hat, watches a lot of old movies when he’s off-duty. You two are . . . involved.”

(I’ll bet she knew that.)

She sighed. “I forget, sometimes. You think my relationship with Mac has some bearing on my relationship with you. It doesn’t.”

Maybe not for you,” Hunter corrected. “And maybe not for him. I have trouble working around that. Once I figure it out, I’ll tell you all about how I feel.” He knew exactly how to push her buttons, or to make her think about it. His choice was the latter, this time.

I don’t even know how to respond,” Shan decided after a moment.

(Me, either.)

What do you need my help for?” he changed the subject none too smoothly.

I’m a Scout, I might as well see what I can about this trade route. Maybe it will keep Command from firing me, later.”

(looks for another cup of coffee)

Hunter folded his arms, never sure if she was joking when it came to Command.

(You know nothing, Hunter.  Nothing!)

There are times I really despise that . . . smug look,” she folded her arms, daring him to respond.

(You’re really not going to let him walk away like that, are you?  ARE YOU??)

“This is one of three air bursts,” Vance said, pointing to the video monitor. It was aimed east twenty miles and recording. Wade would look at it later. The grouping of buildings was isolated and more than that, destroyed. Melted, irradiated, and nothing remained that looked like it had ever been occupied by a human being.

“Rocky Flats,” Shan said carefully. There were no ghosts, no remnants of the past, crowding into her thoughts. She was glad for that, having firsthand experience with a nuclear detonation. This place was . . . null.

Many of us are familiar with the fact cops live on coffee. So what if coffee as we know it simply didn’t exist? Here’s a great recipe for campfire coffee or a tasty treat right in your home.

Strong Campfire Coffee
(adjust to your taste)

1 cup water
2 tbsp ground Chicory
2 tbsp ground coffee beans
1/4 cup clean egg shell
1/4 cup woodchips (hickory, apple, your choice)
optional – a pinch of cinnamon
optional – ground vanilla bean
optional – cream
optional – honey

Step 1 – combine Chicory, coffee, cinnamon, and water in a pot. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
Step 2 – in a cloth bag , add egg shell, vanilla, and woodchips. Steep in the hot liquid for a few minutes (to taste; the longer it steeps, the richer the coffee). Remove bag.
Step 3 – filter coffee through a clean cloth. Add cream and honey if desired. Enjoy hot.

The Vista, available now.

The Vista

The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood series takes place in the near-future where the Earth has been nearly emptied of human beings by a short and devastating world war. Venturing beyond the safety of their valley may be the best move Security has ever made; it’s absolutely the most dangerous.

Excerpt from The Vista

Something worked around the edges of his thoughts, distracting him already and it was before breakfast. The sensation became a little clearer, then it was gone. There was no point trying to ignore it. Vance gave in, heading to the City Center on a day he’d hoped to get away from it.

“Get Caulder and Cooper in here to see me as soon as you hear from them,” he told his sentry. Then he sat down for a cup of tea. Chamomile, fairly appropriate, considering. He’d need more than tea to calm things down if what he believed he’d sensed had actually happened.

There was a soft rap on the door shortly and both men appeared. “What’s today’s objective?” Caulder, JT, wondered for both of them.

“No, nothing so organized as that,” Vance said. “It’s my day off.”

Cooper knew better. “That means something unexpected has reared its ugly head and we get to go clean it up.”

They were damned near half his age. Going out for weeks at a time didn’t bother them. Getting into a fight didn’t either. “JT, do you remember that recurring problem we had up north?”

“Up north,” he repeated, crossing his arms and thinking about it.

“Up north,” Vance agreed.

“Do you mean that little enclave with a batch of active Altereds?”

“I do.”

“How many are a ‘batch’?” Cooper wondered. He barely remembered the big war, but the smaller ones, hell, he’d been involved in a lot of those. This didn’t sound good on any front.

“I don’t know. We tend to be drawn to each other, or at least, after civilization left us. The part that concerns me is the active part.” Vance had no illusions that this wouldn’t become a problem. “At the very least there are two.”

“Two?” Cooper repeated. “Are two a concern?”

“These two are,” JT said.

Cooper put together conversations he’d heard. “Are these the ones in Montana?”

JT and Vance nodded. “Except sometimes they aren’t in Montana,” Vance continued. “Sometimes they wander about to see the sights. We try to keep tabs on them, but clearly it’s not an easy thing to do because of a lot of reasons, not the least being distance, weather and the fact they are active.”

“And that’s why we’re here,” JT said.

“Where are they now?” Cooper asked.

“If the weather stays good, you could probably have lunch with them tomorrow,” Vance said.

“Ah, Christ, tell me they aren’t snooping around NORAD,” JT groaned.

“I could tell you that,” Vance said. “Or I could tell you they were there yesterday.”

“What do we do about it?” Cooper wondered.

“Nothing,” Vance said. “For now. Nothing may come of this. It all depends on Rafe.”

“He took up residence damned close to NORAD a few years ago,” Cooper remembered.

“A few,” JT agreed. “He won’t react well to this.”

“If he even knows,” Cooper said.

“He knows,” Vance said. “He has eyes everywhere.”

“So we wait for Rafe to make a move?” Cooper asked.

“We stay the hell out of his way,” JT said. “We’ll live longer.”

S. A. Hoag is an author, lapidary artist, very amateur astronomer (“I just look at the stars, I can’t name ’em.”), and accidental desert-dweller. Born in the middle of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, more specifically Salida, she has lived in a number of cities in a number of states before crash-landing in the New Mexico desert. Not Roswell, however. Science Fiction has always been her first interest in reading and writing; many other genres sneak into the novels and that’s alright with her.

Where to find her –

The Vista, available now.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Just added! Release date set, here’s some promo for the new one.

Backlash is the prequel novella to The Wildblood series by S. A. Hoag. Set on a near-future Earth mostly devoid of humans, this reveals some of the harsh realities facing people of The Vista, and how Team Three began.

Blurb – Backlash

Before Team Three became Team Three, there was The Blackout.

Vista Security is used to the feral bands of human wandering the landscape since a brief and devastating war wiped away civilization. Sixteen years later, they’ve adapted to dealing with the challenges facing their safe haven.

That is, until a new threat appears, one they never expected and one they have little defense against. Security throws in everything they can muster; it quickly takes a toll. Their advantage – an untested team of officers barely more than children themselves; officers with dark secrets and a hidden agenda.

In a free-for-all battle to preserve one of the last sanctuaries of man, Team Three discovers their secrets are their strength and that their future will take them far beyond what they’ve ever known.

Action, a bit of romance and a good splash of sci-fi set the scene for Backlash, the prequel novella of The Wildblood series.

Backlash has a release date of June 22, 2015.

Check out other amazing SF & F authors here. They’re a talented bunch! Oh, and Happy Birthday SFFS! 4 years old.

Now a snippet from my WIP, Backlash. This is a prequel novella to The Vista, but it’s a standalone as well. This bit is a fight-or-flight scene, when it turns out there isn’t really a choice.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Nomads came out of the shadows. The one closest to Shan swung at her head with a length of PVC pipe and she had enough time to throw her hands up in defense. The brunt of the blow hit her left arm and she went down, trying to roll away from her attacker. She caught a glimpse of Green, disarmed and putting up a fight against two of them. The good news was that he was a hand-to-hand combat trainer; the bad news was that he was already injured.

“This one’s a girl,” the Nomad brandishing a pipe at her announced.

“Then don’t damage her, you idiot,” one of the pair attempting to take down Green yelled back.

Shan took the opportunity to draw her sidearm.

WeWriWa #8Sunday

Welcome to #8Sunday! Visit the website for many awesome authors and a glimpse of some of their work. Now, my 8 from Backlash, the prequel novella to The Vista, release date next month! In this, Wade and Shannon are discussing what is expected of rookie officers.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“I wasn’t questioning you, I was questioning the conditions. If I’m going to be out there a week or better, I want to know what to expect,” Shan offered.

“Expect to be doing a lot of driving,” Wade already had a plan, it was what he did. “You’ll have your own room. You’ve been to the depot, you understand it’s going to be crowded. Expect quick, plain meals, a warm place to sleep and more hours than you’re used to. Expect to learn more in the next week than you have all summer. If I catch you slacking off or not doing your job, expect that I’ll stick you back in dispatch for another year.”

#8Sunday WeWriWa

Ah, the weekend already! Time for 8 sentences from a WIP (formerly known as The Blackout and tentatively titled ‘Backlash’.) This is the prequel novella to The Vista.

Want to see many more talented writers? Click the graphic!

In this snippet, Mac and Shannon are discussing their private life – or lack thereof. I’m not certain what degree of detail I want, but it won’t be a ‘how-to’ manual. Thoughts? What do readers prefer?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“We’ve had this conversation a lot the past year. Every time we do, you forget it three days later.” When he started to shake his head, she reached up to catch a handful of unruly hair and kissed him. Mac leaned in, hands on her hips and drew her against him. The kiss lingered.

“Do you think now is a good time for this?” he asked finally, out of breath.

“We have twelve hours of dark, twelve hours of curfew,” she said, knowing they’d just passed the
autumn equinox. “When are we ever going to have this much privacy again, Alex?”

And things get more complicated and interesting after that. Promo for The Vista now! Click on this graphic to go to Amazon.

WeWriWa #8Sunday

First, I must sing the kudos of a wonderful site that has led me to some great books and amazing authors. Check it out, leave some comments. Authors thrive on comments. And coffee.

My 8, from the prequel novella to ‘The Vista’ I need to be thinking of a title for. This has a nice little romance in it, I swear. I’m just not comfortable with posting those bits quite yet. Soon.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Shan felt as if time slowed, stuttered around her. She tried to look up, feeling the air itself pulsing around her as something massive blocked out the sun.

Ghosts, Wade knew but it was too late to tell them. He was watching the road and it was before Team Sixteen left the depot. The roar of it was deafening; he could hear it because she could.

“Don’t touch her,” Mac warned, seeing her gaze go fixed on things they couldn’t see. Taylor was waving at them frantically. “They’ve never done it at the same time,” he exhaled sharply, alarmed as the situation spiraled completely out of control in that moment.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

And now, for something completely the same! Available now at Amazon. Yes, my name is wrong on this cover; it was a finalist, not ~the~ cover however. You can click on it to go to Amazon if you’re so inclined.

Welcome to my latest installment of #8Sunday. This is from The Vista, my first published novel and Book 1 of The Wildblood. In the next week or two, I’ll be moving on to the prequel, which should be released in June. I’ve really got to get thinking about a more interesting title for The Blackout.

Anyway, check out all the other authors at WeWriWa. There’s a great selection here.

And now, my 8.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“About Mac,” she told him. “I don’t know where that’s going. I don’t know where you and I are going.”

“That’s not something even Gen Ens can predict,” Hunter told her. “I can’t compete with Mac, anyway you look at it.”

“I never expected you to.” It frustrated her, not being able to control the situation. Wade had warned her.

The Vista by S. A. Hoag, available now!

Team Three has a secret, one they think they’ve kept from all but a select few colleagues. They couldn’t be more wrong.

Allen, MacKenzie and Wade are Vista Security’s top officers, part of the first generation post-World War 3. They’ve trained all their lives to survive and thrive in a cold, hostile world. Their secret – they believe they are genetically enhanced and are unquestionably connected psychically. Hidden away in an enclave in the Rocky Mountains, they’re also at the forefront of the movement to see what’s left of the outside world. Not everyone in The Vista is as eager to venture forth.

As they attempt to learn the truth, their mere presence makes them targets of a vicious renegade with the means to destroy everything they know. Facing exile or worse, Team Three has short time to figure out who is enemy, who is friend and how to save their home and themselves.

The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood series by S. A. Hoag takes place in the near-future where the Earth has been mostly emptied of human beings by a short and devastating world war. Venturing beyond the safety of their valley may be the best move Security has ever made; it’s absolutely the most dangerous.

SFFS – Hunter & Shannon

SFFSat logo

This is my first post with SFFS – Hello! I hope to make this a regular stop, as long as I have something new and interesting to post. Today I’ve got a snippet between Hunter and Shannon, 2 parts of an almost love triangle. Yes, it’s complicated. Emotions get that way. As much as The Vista isn’t a romance by definition, it should be. Without it, there’d be no story. So, here it is.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“What do you want me to say, Hunter?” she asked.

“Nothing, I want you to listen.” He wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “Later, when this is over, I want you to know if you ever need me, all you have to do is ask. Anything, anytime. I mean that.”

She nodded.

“Will I be your second, when we’re finished in Colorado?”

“I don’t know,” she confessed.

“It doesn’t matter. What I said, I meant.”

They watched the empty valley for awhile, until the wind started. Shan hoped it didn’t mean snow. Hunter hoped it did.

Teaser Tuesday

So it’s Tuesday already? Huh. The week has zipped by; the book has been out 5 days. Wow. Also, check out the SciFi Romance Group on Facebook. Click on the banner to be magically transported there. But finish reading my blog first.

And now, a Teaser for Tuesday. This is from The Vista.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

It always started the same. Shan could hear the helicopters, feel the beat of their blades against the cold morning air, somewhere far in the distance. It only sounded like one, but she knew there were two. After a few moments, she realized she wasn’t at Depot South. They were UH-60s, Black Hawks, painted in desert camo with no other markings. One was armed with a pair of M60 machine guns, the other had a TOW missile system. Security hadn’t been able to lure them away. She was in The Vista. The helicopters had found them.

Thrashing around, she sat up, going for her gun hanging from the bedpost. And it was over just as fast. Shan was shaking, from the cold and from the nightmare. It was sometime long past dark. It had woke Wade too, and she knew he was home in The Vista. She waited, wrapping the blanket around herself. Moments later, Mac was there. He didn’t bother to knock.
