It’s An Internet Thing

Time to get critical. Use these questions to explore the less-than-lovely aspects of your character. Even the most heroic of protagonists have a couple of skeletons in their closet.

• What’s the worst thing you’ve ever wished on somebody (and who was it)?

Wade: A slow death. No names.

Mac: Oh, I wanted to kill him fast and party on his corpse.

Wade: Same person.

Mac: There were two, but you know which one. Personal grudge.

Wade: Grudge? Interesting take.

• When was the last time you lied? What made you do it?

Mac: I prefer not to lie.

Wade: Nah, you just stop talking.

Mac: That’s brilliant, coming from you. When was the last time you lied?

Wade: It’s an ongoing part of my life.

• Is there somebody you haven’t been able to forgive? What did they do? Do you want to forgive them?

Wade: There are whole groups of people, and they started the lies. There is no ‘forgive’.

Mac: I understand why they did what they did. I have no remorse, but trust is another thing. It’s not earned easily.

• Can you lie easily?

Wade: (laughs)

Mac: When it’s necessary.

• Do you handle rejection well?

Wade: I don’t know.

Mac: I suppose, I mean, what choice is there?

• Have you ever done something illegal?

Wade: I’ll have to refer you to my lawyer.

Mac: Define ‘illegal’.

• Are you more likely to ask for permission or forgiveness?

Wade: Forgiveness.

Mac: Permission.

Wade: I knew that.

Mac: Shut up.

• What terrible thing have you done that you never thought you would do?

Wade: It’s not that I didn’t think I could, but if I would. The answer is yes. If you are my enemy, if you threaten my home, I’ll hunt you down.

Mac: I couldn’t do the things Wade has done.

• What criticism would your worst enemy make of you, that you secretly agree with?

Wade: That I’m just like him. He was right.

Mac: We can’t stay hidden forever. He proved it, and here we are.

WeWriWa and Snippet Sunday – check them out if you like books.  You won’t be sorry.

wewriwa

Holy cow, Batman, did that week fly by.  The bad news is – there are parts of Tau Scorpii I won’t share on the blog, and that’s where I am right now.  The good news – it’s moving right along.  So, this week is a snippet from Bloodlines, currently out with an editor.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The Wildblood – No one remembers what started the war, the big one. Civilization stopped, and what came next was fueled by rage and fear.

Twenty years on, a tiny refuge, a place called The Vista, may be one of the last vestiges of humanity. Isolated, guarded, and hiding a dark secret, the people have survived World War Last, and they are content with that. Their children, however, are not. The search for others will send them out into a world they know nothing about, where the line between enemy and ally is blurred.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This is Hunter and Shannon, having a conversation.  All hell is about to break loose.  He’s always suspected the secrets of Team Three and the Altered were darker than anyone cared to admit.  The team has gotten themselves exiled from The Vista because of their refusal to cooperate with Council.  Things are about to get even more complicated than they were.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Everyone has goals, it’s not a bad thing,” Hunter said.

I agree, as long as the Altered status in The Vista isn’t at risk.”

Do you think it is?”

You saw how Council was. I wanted to tell them, but I won’t, I can’t. They need to go on thinking . . .” Shan trailed off, never having said it, to anyone.

“Thinking what, tell them what?” Hunter asked.

She shook her head.

You said that you wished everyone knew they were like you – is it true?”

Torn, Shan didn’t want to answer, knowing he wouldn’t give up without one. “Not in the way you think.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Yikes!  I really hope I wrap this up as well as I want.  Its been interesting.  I can’t swear I won’t wander back to this world at some point.  For now, Tau Scorpii is next.  Then, who knows?  Gratuitous promo next.  The books are mostly on sale for now.  They won’t be, when I release Bloodlines, FYI.

Excerpt (Backlash: Prequel to The WIldblood)

“Shannon,” her radio crackled static, snapping her out of a restless sleep. It was Wade on his private channel.

“Go ahead,” she answered groggily. Her watch read 9:30 pm and she was supposed to go on duty at 2:00 am. An hour – she’d been asleep an hour.

“Gear up. I’ll be there in five minutes to get you.”

“What’s going on?” she wondered, rubbing her eyes.

“Don’t ask, just do.”

He didn’t sound like they might be playing wargames. Shan moved.

Her mother was in the kitchen. Deirdre Allen was five foot three, with pale blond hair, hazel eyes, and was one of The Vista’s actual doctors. She’d been twenty-nine when civilization ended. “The hospital just called me in,” she announced. “Are you on-call?”

“I am now. Wade didn’t tell me why.”

“War games?”

“No,” Shan told her. “Not this time. I know you don’t like carrying, but I think this is serious. Take a sidearm, Mom, please.”

Deirdre nodded. “For your peace of mind I will.” She knew how to use it; she’d been forced to in the past and hoped she never would again. “Whatever it is, be careful.”

“I am, and Wade wouldn’t let me get away with anything else.”

She hugged her. “I mean it.”

“I’ll see you in the morning,” Shan said, hearing a car. “That’s Wade. If he tells me it’s practice, I’ll let you know.” She didn’t think it was likely, but he’d fooled her before.

The moment she dropped into the passenger seat, she knew it was real. “Can you tell me now?” She’d dressed in winter camos with body armor, both Sigs and a boot gun, clips in all her pockets, plus an array of knives. Her pack held spare ammo, food rations and various bits of survival equipment.

He glanced sideways at her, heading towards Station Two with a purpose. “We lost a Scout at Wisdom about an hour ago.”

“Lost?” she repeated, not expecting it.

Book Highlight – The Vista

Vista_blankThe Wildblood Series

A Post-Apocalyptic Action Adventure

No one remembers what started the war, the big one.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood introduces Team Three – they’re young, ambitious, and at the forefront of a movement to discover what is beyond The Vista. They also believe they are genetically enhanced, a practice outlawed long before they were born. Venturing beyond their valley draws the attention of someone dangerous, someone that shares their past and wants to control their future, or destroy them because of what they might be.

What Readers Are Saying

“As a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, I was curious to see what new ground this story would cover. Not disappointed! The post-nuclear world is a bit different from the stories Generation X was told.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“There are only a few books that make me want to immediately re-read the second I finish reading. This is one of those books.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“I really enjoyed this book, especially once I started to understand what made Team Three tick and how their special connection drove the plot forward to a very satisfying, action-packed ending.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“There are many undercurrents and betrayals going on. The Vista is well paced, and intriguing. I read it in one setting, determined to get to the truth … and while I got many truths sorted out, others will have to be sussed out in book 2.”

“As a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, I was curious to see what new ground this story would cover. Not disappointed! The post-nuclear world is a bit different from the stories Generation X was told.”

“As a huge fan of the Fallout franchise and post-apocalyptic fiction and media in general, the Vista series feels like it has fallen from the sky into my grasp!”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“This is dystopian fiction at its best. Looking forward to the sequel.”

OK. This is a private conversation between Shan & Mac. Their relationship is complex, to say the least. It takes place after the events in The Vista, and before Renegades.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“When I was twelve, I thought we’d live together, forever. I imagined we had a yurt, up on the other side of the stables, so we could look out over The Vista from our front door. I’d raise herbs and you’d go hunting,” Shan mused.

“A couple hundred years ago, that might have worked out, for other people. Now that you’re twenty, everything looks different.”

“It doesn’t mean I have to like it.”

“Yes, it does, our lives go on, and it will be beautiful. Sometimes, it will be horrible, and difficult. That’s just the way life is, for everyone, even us.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

And there they are! As always, you can find all my eBooks and paperbacks on my website. I think next week, the new series gets a teaser!

SFRB Showcase July 2016!

SFRB-ShowcaseBanner

The banner takes you right to the place to find all kinds of amazing authors and their offerings for July.  Check it out.  Not only are they talented writers, they’ve gotten me through a lots of bumps in the road to publishing, and surviving after publishing.

On to a snippet.  I’ve rewritten this scene a few times, and while I can’t guarantee it’s done being tweaked, I think it is.  So for something completely different, I’m going to post the snippet, with my personal thoughts interjected in parenthesis.  This is really how my brain works.  you’ve been warned.

Hunter and Shannon have a reunion, about halfway through Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood.  Read the bold lines first, that’s the actual snippet.  Reread.  My smarmy comments are in italics.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You’re not wearing body armor,” Hunter observed.

(Did you really think he wouldn’t notice that??)

She glared at him, dropping her canteen and clamping her mouth shut instead of saying something rude.

(You’re so lucky she didn’t punch you.  She’s twenty, for god’s sake.  Her hormones are running amok.)

He knew that look. “And you’re pissed at me. Because I kissed you?”

(I was right, you really are clueless.)

For a moment, Shan was astonished. “You think that’s why I’m angry?” She put her hands on her hips, only accentuating the fact she was mad, and that she wasn’t wearing body armor.

Apparently, no. What did I do wrong?” Hunter asked, leery.

(Oh, Hunter, you silly, silly man.)

You could have asked me to come with you, when you left Estes Park.”

(You’re not paying enough attention, Hunter.  You should run now.)

You told me not to.”

(See previous statement.)

I might have alluded to it. The point is, you should have asked.” Shan was frustrated. He wasn’t like the other men she knew, the ones she’d grown up around. She had no trouble expressing herself to the select few of Team Three’s inner circle, or talking them in to things.

(Men.)

There was no winning the argument, he knew from past experience. “What about Mac?” he expressed his own frustration.

(Noooooooooo!!  You did not just say that!)

Mac?” she repeated, puzzled.

(It’s OK, Shan.  He’s clueless.)

Tall guy. Wears a cowboy hat, watches a lot of old movies when he’s off-duty. You two are . . . involved.”

(I’ll bet she knew that.)

She sighed. “I forget, sometimes. You think my relationship with Mac has some bearing on my relationship with you. It doesn’t.”

(TAKE THE HINT.)

Maybe not for you,” Hunter corrected. “And maybe not for him. I have trouble working around that. Once I figure it out, I’ll tell you all about how I feel.” He knew exactly how to push her buttons, or to make her think about it. His choice was the latter, this time.

(~headdesk~)

I don’t even know how to respond,” Shan decided after a moment.

(Me, either.)

What do you need my help for?” he changed the subject none too smoothly.

(YOU EEEDIOTT!)

I’m a Scout, I might as well see what I can about this trade route. Maybe it will keep Command from firing me, later.”

(looks for another cup of coffee)

Hunter folded his arms, never sure if she was joking when it came to Command.

(You know nothing, Hunter.  Nothing!)

There are times I really despise that . . . smug look,” she folded her arms, daring him to respond.

(You’re really not going to let him walk away like that, are you?  ARE YOU??)

Check out the blog, you won’t regret it. I’ve found some fabulous books there. A few lines from my WIP Renegades; Book 2 of The Wildblood. Release date not solid yet, but it’s looking like August. This year. 🙂

A less-serious conversation. It’s not all doom and gloom in the future!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“What really happened in Colorado?” Lambert had read the official reports and knew they were at least fifty percent bullshit.

“He was Gen En, he’d watched us for years, or watched Wade and Shan. I’m apparently different enough to be invisible.”

“Rafe was watching?” Lambert confirmed.

“Yeah, him.”

“Maybe being invisible is your superpower.”

“Ouch,” Mac grimaced, deadpanning.

“Don’t take it personal.”

“Don’t repeat that to anyone, ever.”

And that’s the blog you want to visit to find teasers of some amazing book from some amazing authors.  I have to play catch-up this week because I’ve been falling behind.  But, now a few words from my WIP Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood.  This is a continuation from last week.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Green was yelling at her, or something like it. His mouth was moving but there was no sound. She wondered disjointedly what had happened to his voice. He moved, getting to his knees, trying to get her moving.

Where’s Wade?” she shouted, the steady ringing in her ears making her own words sound distant.

He caught her face to get her attention and make her look at him. “Can you understand what I’m saying?” he asked, mouthing the words so she could read his lips.

Yes,” she nodding vigorously, making her vision spin, equilibrium gone.

The structure is unstable,” he pointed at the gaping hole over them. “We have to get out.”

Ha!  that’s all this week.  You can catch up on the story arc with The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood by following the promo link. Available on all formats.
