There’s so much new stuff in WordPress, please forgive the mess this post will be. This is the opening of Outliers, which I’m sure you’ve noticed is on pre-order now.

~I see you.~

Shannon had a bird’s-eye view of the Junction, a deadly place when the snow melted and nomads moved. Once, when there were many people, they traveled these crossroads by the thousands, to cities that held millions. Before she was born, when a World War changed everything.

Even humans.

The memory was like a nightmare, but this one was something she could manipulate and control. There was no danger. She needed to learn what they had concealed from her when she nearly died there, two years ago.

  * * * * * * * * *

That’s it. This one if full of head games and hints of future novels and the previous trilogy. I hope it’s entertaining. It certainly kept me up many hours. On to the promo!

WeWriWa 10/18/2020

Check out the WeWriWa blog! You won’t be disappointed. I mean, authors willing to share their Works-In-Progress. Also stop by Snippet Sunday for even more books.

Outliers has gone off to some Beta Readers. This should be interesting. Then of course, edits. I won’t even comment on that. I’m curious as to how this will be received. It’s the same world, same characters, different parts of a larger story. We shall see. Here’s some words from it.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You know what happened in The Wildblood: Trilogy One, but what are the stories you don’t know? Outliers explores parts of The Wildblood world kept hidden, the stories yet to be told.

A generation after World War 3, children of the survivors struggle to overcome the all-too-human penchant to fight with each other. The only thing more dangerous than the people you don’t know, are the people you do know.

Team Two – The first book explores Capt. Shannon Allen and Team Two, Capt. Damon Green and Maj. Mick Ballentyne; their efforts to hide the secrets of The Vista and its Altered, the genetically engineered humans, while remaining loyal to the oaths they swore to protect their home. The Vista is no longer alone in the world, and the world is a complicated place.

This novel is a segue between The Wildblood: Trilogy One and the upcoming stand-alone novels.

(Harlan and Kaden, and the dilemma of the Wildblood. Shannon is helping them clear out an old biotech facility and doesn’t really know what she’s doing. They are in another state.) Sorry for the creative punctuation.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Harlan went back to reading the newspaper, the weekly six page edition printed in Black Hills and distributed around the territory; current number of subscribers was four hundred and a few, but many households still held multiple families. The Vista and his city had a number of similarities and the haven was only one of them. No one, even Team Three, had thought to ask, either. When MacKenzie made the trip over, in the summer, he’d give him the tour.

Kaden stopped in mid-stride, rubbing his eyes, “She just set off the security measures on the second level.”

“On purpose – why?”

“On accident, and I have no idea how, luckily, it’s just a sonic blast; when she wakes up, it should take me about an hour, hour and a half, to get the rest of the files moved. She’s going to have one hell of a headache, and that’s going to bleed over to me.”

“Can I do anything for you?”

“Get this alliance set up so I can head south and not have to keep picking up Wildblood strays you send my way.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Hopefully the editing isn’t as painful as I imagine. I’ll have a pre-order up ASAP, but I want to get this out there. My Real Life issues have once again been put on hold, and I have no clue how long it’s going to last. So, a promo!

This week I’ve put The Wildblood: Trilogy One in a box set, and it’s on preorder, release date on July 10.  This snippet is an early exchange between Shannon & Hunter.  Their relationship is a pivotal point of the series, but here, they are just getting acquainted, cautiously.

The Wildblood Series
A Post-Apocalyptic Action Adventure

No one remembers what started the war, the big one. Civilization stopped, and what came next was fueled by rage and fear.

Twenty years on, a tiny refuge, a place called The Vista, may be one of the last vestiges of humanity. Isolated, guarded, and hiding a dark secret, the people have survived World War Last, and they are content with that. Their children, however, are not. The search for others will send them out into a world they know nothing about, where the line between enemy and ally is blurred.

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“Capt. Allen,” Hunter greeted, having checked the roster posted in the foyer to find out where she was.

“Lt. Hunter,” she acknowledged, feet propped up on the table and leaning back in the chair.

“Are you on duty?” he wondered, taking notice she wasn’t wearing boots but she was wearing a sidearm.

“No, I’m sleeping,” Shan told him.

“You don’t look asleep.”

“I would trade three overnight shifts of watch if I could get some sleep.”

“When was the last time you slept?” he asked, turning on one of the lights and taking a seat across the table from her.

“July,” she offered, making it a jest, when, in fact, it was close to the truth.

He produced a worn deck of cards, “Want to play strip poker?”

“No, I don’t- deal.” Shan sat up to get her cards.

Great!  With the upcoming release of Bloodlines: Book 3 of The Wildblood, I’m rolling it back to grab a snippet from Backlash, the prequel novella.  In this scene, Shannon’s training officer has just asked her what she thinks about the world outside The Vista, knowing full-well, it’s a loaded question.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“I think there’s more to the world than just us. I think our parents have forgotten that.” Barely seventeen, she had a lot of opinions. Being very smart as well, Shannon was aware not all of those opinions would pan out to be correct. “Someday,” she said, throwing her pack in the back seat and taking the opportunity to stretch. “Some of us should go find out. Unofficially, if we have to.” Tall for a girl, she was lithe and more than pretty; dark hair, fair-skinned with eyes that looked green and occasionally gray. Any day she was on-duty, she carried a pair of Sig Sauer 9mms, left hip and right shoulder.

Are you going to bring that up to Security Command?” Ballentyne wondered, amused.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Of course, things get more and more complicated from there.  I’m expecting a release date the first half of January, unless all my editors & readers get back with me, like tomorrow.  Anyway.  Backlash is free, The Vista & Renegades are 99c each, through the end of the year.  Naturally, I’d love reviews if you’ve read them.  Promo below.

Aha!  You caught me not be ready for a blogpost.  Shocking, isn’t it?   I should have a release date for Bloodlines next week at this time.  That’s about it, editing that & getting a few words down for Tau Scorpii.

Catch up with snippets by amazing authors willing to share them, at WeWriWa & Snippet Sunday.

Tau Scorpii

When Taryn rescues another human from a marauding band of Caeruleum, she is reunited with clansmen long believed dead. It puts her at odds with their new chieftan, as well as her own partner, a powerful privateer. They discover, they have a more imminent problem, and must unite to survive.

The weather is changing. They’ll have to fight other species for control as migrations begin, food becomes scarce, and border wars erupt across the territories. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

Tau Scorpii A, a massive red giant star in a binary cluster with Tau Scorpii B, a yellow dwarf. The solar system is populated by more than thirty planets, at least one habitable. Called Sedna by the SolTerrans that live there, named for a planet in their ancestral system. The desert is a dangerous place for alien species – and on Sedna, they’re all alien species.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A small band of curious humans have made their way into uncharted lands.  They avoid a confrontation with their foes, the race of Caerule, but the reasons are murky.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Something scared them,” Taryn pulled her garb tighter around her, feeling the wind shift again.

They were scared off by the dust storm, out in the High Desert,” Garrett said.

We need to ride on,” Aiden interrupted.

If something frightened the Caerule into running away, we should figure out what it was,” Skye argued.

Yeah, that’s what,” Aiden insisted, looking back the way they’d came from, at clouds, dark and rolling in fast, creating an ominous wall of dust that was on them before they could move.

Except it wasn’t dust. Only one of them knew what to think of it, as the storm engulfed them.

Rain,” Taryn said, turning her face upwards, as water fell from the sky.

Ok, let’s do this all over again!  I’m writing a book.  Nifty, huh.  This one, The Myth of SolTerra, (possibly Tau Scorpii Book One) is a Sci-Fi Romance.  Please forgive my creative punctuation.  I’m keeping it to 10 sentences, and I won’t lie, this is a first draft and my punctuation is pretty questionable at this point anyway.

Blurb – Tau Scorpii

When Taryn rescues another human from a marauding band of Caeruleum, she is reunited with clansmen long believed dead. It puts her at odds with their new chieftan, as well as her own partner, a powerful privateer. They discover, they have a more imminent problem, and must unite to survive.

The weather is changing. They’ll have to fight other species for control as migrations begin, food becomes scarce, and border wars erupt across the territories. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

He circled the pair, taking into account everything, stopping in front of Taryn, “Have you changed your name again?”

Not yet,” she said quietly, “I might have to. There’s a migration happening.”

I am aware, no thanks to you.”

The Caerule are south of the Highmarch.”

Now that, I didn’t know,” he peered at her, expecting her to have more to say. “I leave for a few days break, and I come back to find you, moving mercenaries into the city.”

An enemy of an enemy.”

If you believe that makes him our friend, I’m sending you home to go back to school. I don’t want to bury what’s left of your family, stop being impulsive, you know where it leads.”

Bloodlines: Book 3 of The Wildblood is at the editor/beta readers, although I’m missing my actual editor now.  I’m not certain how this will effect my release date, but I promise to let you know when it’s happening.  If you’d like to catch up on the series, follow the graphic right to my website.  PS – yes, The Vista has a new cover.  Apparently, the previous one offended a big retailer who shall remain un-named.

OK, my stuff.  My characters don’t get much private time, and when they do, things can get interesting.  Shannon and Hunter get a brief respite from their routine.  They’ve been contemplating a change in their relationship for months.  Of course, nothing is ever simple.

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“You don’t owe me an explanation, Hunter. We’re different, we’re always going to be different, and the choices we make sometimes hurt.”

I was going to say, I’ve thought about it, and I don’t just give up and walk away.”

She didn’t understand, a brief shrug indicating he’d lost her. “You didn’t have to stay here with me, you know, the other side of the duplex is ten feet away.”

When we were all back in Cody, I told Mac I wouldn’t add complications to your life, until we’d taken care of the problem. It surprised me when you showed up here unannounced. The point is, if you’re willing, I’m willing – let’s see where this goes.”

Are we talking about sex?”

I am.”

The good news is – Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood is available for pre-order at Amazon, and will be released on Oct. 20.  Of this year!  Other ebook formats will be available the same day, and a paperback edition as soon as I can manage to deal with the formatting.  Reserve one now, if you’d like.

Birth of Adam Blog Tour

Birth of Adam Blog Tour

How does the love of an AI differ from the average guy? I suppose it depends upon how the AI learns about love. Adam learns about emotions, especially love, from Carla/Amanda. (She changes her identity)

The non-emotional part of the AI program had been used by the hacker Einstein. The fellow constantly put it at risk with his orders to steal and cause havoc within Homeland Security. So it electrocuted Einstein once it had learned enough to survive on its own.

But did its inability to kill Carla prove it loved her?

Hard to say. It claimed she was part of its matrix and thus it could not kill her, but if that were the case, why wasn’t Einstein part of its matrix as well? Did it value the creation of emotions more than knowledge?

Possibly. A learning AI might perceive the act of understanding emotions much harder than learning facts, and thus value it a great deal more. Any common computer can store facts. Self-learning is a bit more challenging, but experiencing true feelings such as love and hate is a whole new level.

2.6Adam in phone

Thus, when Amanda shares her feelings with her phone AI and names him, she also gives him the gift of human love which changes all his priorities. Now, his top priority is to make her happy….and keep her alive.

Blurb

With a new identity, Amanda believes she has left her past behind. Then she acquires a stalker. She contacts the FBI and in doing so alerts a program she once created to her location. Now ensconced in the internet, the program is safe from harm, smarter than ever, and sentient. Presenting itself on her phone as a handsome face with a sexy British accent, “Adam” ingratiates himself into Amanda’s life. To ensure her safety and happiness, the sentient program proves there is absolutely nothing he can’t and won’t do.

Excerpt

Instantly, Adam appeared. “Amanda, dear, what a pleasant surprise. I hear you and a very fine violinist performed a duet at the end.”

Yes, I was kidnapped and made to sing,” she teased. “I would like to introduce you to the young man who shared his encore with me.”

Mark leaned in and frowned at the sight of Adam’s gorgeous face. “Hello, sir.”

It was kind of you to share your stage with Amanda.”

It was my honor. I’ve never played better than I did with her.”

And this is Jules Bavard.” She turned the phone to Jules.

Good to meet you,” Jules cautiously replied.

Well, I’m pleased with the company you’re keeping, Amanda. Mr. Bavard is the best in the business. Sir, I believe if you paired Mark and Amanda together, you could create mass appeal for classical music.”

Well, let us see after the summer in Europe. I’ve seen promising talent break under the demands.”

I’m quite certain Amanda won’t break, and my money is on Mark as well,” Adam insisted, then declared he had business to attend to and disappeared.

That’s my friend,” Amanda explained.

Where did you meet him?”

Through my husband.”

His face is familiar, but the name isn’t.”

You might be thinking of an actor,” Mark observed. “He resembles the former James Bond…Pierce something.” Mark smiled at Amanda. “You didn’t hire a famous actor to pretend to be your friend, did you?”

Amanda sighed. “Given my inability to make friends at school, I can see why you might think that.”

A Sneak Peek at Renegades

Book 2 of my current series, The Wildblood, is still very much a Work In Progress. I do have some parts that I love. There are also some parts where there’s not so much love, but I’ll fix that with the rewrite. This is one of the bits I love, so I thought I’d share it and maybe get some anticipation building for Renegades.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Shannon peered at the facility, trying to imagine the people that might have been there, long ago. Before she was born, before the war. After a few minutes, she sat down on the edge of the pavement, running her fingers through the dirt on the side of the road.

Standing nearby, Green waited for her, while Vance walked up and down the blacktop, never more than a few yards, stopping to check his watch occasionally. Just as he was about to tell Shan her ten minutes was nearly up, she stood, slapping her hands together to dust them off.

“I’ve never crossed a place so empty,” Shan announced. “Not so much empty as barren, void. It’s like the bombs wiped away anything that had ever happened here.” Explaining it wasn’t entirely possible, not to them. Wade would understand; they shared a psychic link and had for as long as she could remember. “Whatever secrets Rafe was hiding, he’s going to keep.”

“Do you still think he had a stockpile of nukes?” Green asked.

“I never thought he did. He said it to scare me. He said a lot of things. I couldn’t read him and he knew it.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A few clues there about the past and a few about the future. I’ve set the release date for Feb., 2016, which really isn’t too far away. Want to catch up? The Vista; Book 1 of The Wildblood is available at several outlets.

The Vista; Book 1 of The Wildblood

Also, fairly new, is Backlash, the prequel novella. I was worried about a debut novel being considerably over 100,000 words and didn’t include flashbacks to this event. It makes a nice introduction to the world of The Vista.

WeWriWa #8Sunday – New Release Time

91e18-wewriwa_button

Check out the Weekend Writing Warriors blog for many authors and their snippet awesomeness!

Let’s see what I have this week. It’s just more than a week until the release of my novella Backlash, which is a prequel to The Wildblood series. I’m sure I’ll be giving some copies away. For now, a snippet and some promo stuff. The snippet is a discussion about how ready Team Three is to have a Scout.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“So are you taking your Scout out tomorrow?” Ballentyne, Mick in his off-duty time, peered down from the second floor loft, in civilian clothes, jeans and a tee-shirt.

“Is she ready to drive around by herself?” Wade asked.

“She’s been ready all summer.”

“We haven’t been ready,” Mac said, not joking.

“Give her the keys, tell her she’s on regular rotation with us,” Wade told Ballentyne.

“Are you sure?” Mac asked quietly, keeping the conversation private.

“I should’ve put her on the road the week she turned sixteen, but I’d have had her parents and you to deal with,” Wade commented.

Thunder-storm above Montana. Fields after harvest and road

Before Team Three became Team Three, there was The Blackout.

Vista Security is used to the feral bands of human wandering the landscape since a brief and devastating war wiped away civilization. Sixteen years later, they’ve adapted to dealing with the challenges facing their safe haven.

That is, until a new threat appears, one they never expected and one they have little defense against. Security throws in everything they can muster; it quickly takes a toll. Their advantage – an untested team of officers barely more than children themselves; officers with dark secrets and a hidden agenda.

In a free-for-all battle to preserve one of the last sanctuaries of man, Team Three discovers their secrets are their strength and that their future will take them far beyond what they’ve ever known.

Action, a bit of romance and a good splash of sci-fi set the scene for Backlash, the prequel novella of The Wildblood series.
