Is it Science Fiction Romance?  That seems to be an ongoing question.  The easy part – is it Sci-Fi?  The difficult part is the romance.  In most sci-fi worlds, there are a lot of things happening.  Romance and sex are going to happen, too, that’s just how life is.  I figure, if one or more characters are motivated by love/sex/romantic ideas, the answer is yes.  And it’s not a bad thing.  Anyone that looks down their nose at a ‘romance’ book isn’t paying attention.  Life is motivated by that chance at love.  Without it, what’s the point of merely existing?  So grab a book and enjoy it, whatever labels are tacked on.

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Is my current novella Sci-fi?  And is it romance?  I sit here, laughing.  So many labels could be stuck on this one. Fantasy, Urban Myths, Sci-fi, romance, adult, NSFW? Yes, there is adult content. Is it romance? Considering the characters, I’d have to say yes, but again, no spoilers.

Lyra studies vampires, the minuo, that’s her job.  Figuring out where they came from and if there’s a chance to contain the spread of the infection are her goals.  Yep, Sci-fi.

Romance?  That would be telling.  Hey!  Here’s an excerpt.  Lyra is discussing current events with her brother.  Things are not what they seem.

“What does ‘Samael’ mean to you?” I hadn’t specifically put that in my written report and I sure as hell hadn’t told Jerry. I don’t know why, but it feels like one of those secrets.

Morgan half-heartedly shrugs. “A lot of ancient text consider ‘Samael’ to be the angelic name of Lucifer; others call him ‘the angel of death’.” He mulled on it a few moments, letting me lead him back to my cozy corner. I motion for another round of drinks. “Is that what your shapeshifter called himself?” he finally asks.

“Yea, it is.”

“He is neither,” Morgan tells me.

“I know,” I say.

He said it to scare you.”

“It worked.”

“If I thought this was all an elaborate trap, do you think I’d be letting you get on that airplane tomorrow?” he asks in all seriousness.

“It is an elaborate trap, Morgan, just not for me.”

“At the end of all this, you need to remember which side you are on.” He knows how easy it is to get lost when you’re working both sides.

“I know.”

“Don’t let Jerry get you in to something you can’t handle.” He’s beginning to sound like my father, or something.

“I won’t.”

“Be careful,” he repeats.

“With every breath I take,” I tell him.

Morgan has to get the last word in. “Stop letting Voitec run your life.”

What in the hell else am I supposed to do?

Hunter’s Moon
is an Urban Mythos Novella.  I plan on a series of these urban myth stories; this is the first, and it’s on sale right now for 99¢. Also available at Kobo.

Lyra Alexander considers herself an archeologist, a job that normally wouldn’t be very dramatic or dangerous. The problem with her job, however, is that she studies vampires. And they aren’t too thrilled about being studied.

In this world, there are all kinds of creatures prowling in the night . . . Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

Pre-release Party!

So, I’m missing the WeWriWa this weekend, for a lot of reasons, reasons that would bore you.  I am inviting everyone over to Facebook, for my Pre-release Party of Hunter’s Moon.  There will be games, silliness, and giveaways.  Stop on by, and if you’re interested, I still have times available for authors to host.

Now then, this week’s words, from my newest venture, Hunter’s Moon. It’s the first novella in my Urban Mythos series. They are novella-sized stories that don’t necessarily have anything to do with others in the series, other than being urban myths.

Hunter’s Moon has vampires, shapeshifters, and erotica.  Not here, however.  The excerpt is rated for All Audiences.  This is part of a conversation between the human archaeologists Lyra Alexander and her brother,  Morgan, concerning her recent run-in with shapeshifters.

New Release!

excerpt

“You don’t look so great,” Tegan says as we whip down the highway. He has a lead foot. A new white Mustang convertible, top down, sun high in the sky, temperatures hovering near the comfortable zone, it’s almost a perfect day.

There was dirt road for close to twenty miles, then two lanes of old blacktop for a few more, and finally what I suppose could be considered a real road. My motion sickness has been here for the entire ride, and I think I’m on my last nerve.

“Lyra?”

“I didn’t get any sleep last night. Or the night before,” I tell him flatly. “I’m like that when there are vampires around.”

“If you were in any real danger, do you think I’d have left you alone?” He glances over.

“Don’t you do what they tell you? Isn’t your job to keep me in line?”

He snorts a swear word under his breath.

“And what in the hell is ‘real danger’?” I point out. “There are vampires and . . .” I glance sideways at him, stuttering off the word before I say it.

“Werewolves?” he grins, finishing the thought for me. It’s a derogatory term.

” . . . out there and humans are too ignorant to see how fragile their place on this planet really is.”

“You see them. You know.”

“I know vampires.” All too well. “Shapeshifters,” I shrug.

“You do know, I’m a shapeshifter.” He isn’t threatening me, but it comes off sounding like something I didn’t want to hear anyway.

Of course.”

“How did you know?” he asks. It’s an honest question. When you spend god-knows how many years masquerading as something you’re not, it pays to find the little details you might miss.

“Body temperature.”

“Ah the one thing I can’t change,” he nods. “Now, did you know, or did your brother tell you?”

“I knew. We did get pretty damned close. Morgan told me what ‘Samael’ means.”

“Did it scare you?” he asks, amused. He gets a lot of free entertainment at my expense.

  “No,” I lie.

Author Info

I knew before I got to high school that I wanted to write books. I did, too, dozens of short stories I thought someday I’d turn into novels. Oh, how I wish I had those spiral notebooks full of wild ideas and teenage musings.

I still have the ideas from many of those stories – some of them make me cringe. There are always new ideas too. Some are amazing, some are just silly. A few will become something more as I add books to my list of those that are published.

For now, I live in the desert and many nights, in between writing and sleep, you can find me out watching the stars. It’s dark, out here in the desert and I can see so many stars that weren’t there before. I make time to write now. The tiny seeds of stories demand that I write them down.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy creating them.

OK, here’s the sneak peek at my newest venture, Hunter’s Moon. Another encounter between the MCs. As it’s a novella, it will be released next and I’m aiming for the end of April or the first week of May. By next weekend, I should have a firm date set.

The keycard to my room flashes red and won’t let me in. I have about an hour before I am supposed to be leaving for Monterrey, and I’m locked out of my room. I step back to study the situation and collide with a brick wall that wasn’t there five seconds ago. The breath stops in my throat. I’m standing in full sunlight coming from the window here at the end of the hall, so whoever I’ve backed into is scarier than a vampire. My brain tells me this as I teeter on the edge of panic.

I spin around and he already knows I’m going for a throat strike. He swats my hand away like I’m five. So much for martial arts training. ‘Samael’ smiles at me like I’m lunch as he pushes me back into the door.

This week, something different. I’ve got a novella, sitting here gathering eDust, and decided to go ahead and publish. It’s not my usual scifi thing – this one is a paranormal, urban fantasy novella with a dash of erotica thrown in. No, really. Here’s some words from Hunter’s Moon.

Lyra and Morgan Alexander (sister and brother team) are discussing her recent run-in with a mysterious shapeshifter.

“A lot of ancient text consider ‘Samael’ to be the angelic name of Lucifer; others call him ‘the angel of death’.” Morgan mulled on it a few moments, letting me lead him back to my cozy corner. “Is that what your shapeshifter called himself?” he finally asks.
