Check out the amazing authors sharing their snippets.

Also drop by Snippet Sunday.

This snippet is from Outliers, the new Wildblood novel.  I’ve already changed it up a bit, telling the story of Shannon and Green, and a lot of history about The Vista not seen in the first trilogy.   Here, Green and Dallas are discussing their options, in light of recent events.  No one ever said life was fair.  While there are Security officers aware Council has its own agenda, they are also aware the situation is beyond their control.

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“In the meantime, we’re going to pretend nothing out-of-the ordinary is happening, that we’re not watching for stragglers wandering in from Estes Park, that Council hasn’t been hiding the fact they’ve had contact there for over a decade, and that the Altered are an urban myth.”  Green was as angry about how Council had deceived Security as he had been when he figured it out, a year and a half ago.

So, nothing new,” Dallas added with biting sarcasm. “Are you really willing to let it go, everything Council has done, and what its caused?”

Truthfully, yes. There’s nothing we can do. Even if we could, remember the oath you took when you joined Security?”

Dallas looked pissed for a few moments, knowing full-well his anger at Green was displaced. “Protect all citizens of The Vista and external allied communities first,” he recited.

Council members are citizens, last time I checked.”

I wish I had a time frame for release, but those never work for me.  I need someone standing behind me with a whip and a cup of coffee, apparently.  There are also 3 other novels in various stages of progress, a time travel thing, a dimensional travel thing, and a colonization thing.  So many things.  In my fantasy world, I’d like to release these next year, one every couple months.  Wouldn’t that be cool?  I’m so jealous of people that can keep to their writing schedule.

And now, for a promo.

As a huge fan of the Fallout franchise and post-apocalyptic fiction and media in general, the Vista series feels like it has fallen from the sky into my grasp!
– Amazon Review-

No one remembers what started the war, the big one. Civilization stopped, and what came next was fueled by rage and fear.

Twenty years on, a tiny refuge, a place called The Vista, may be one of the last vestiges of humanity. Isolated, guarded, and hiding a dark secret, the people have survived World War Last, and they are content with that. Their children, however, are not. The search for others will send them out into a world they know nothing about, where the line between enemy and ally is blurred.  The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood – Available in paperback and eBooks at www.topaz08.com .

You know what happened in The Wildblood: Trilogy One, but what are the stories you don’t know? Outliers explores parts of The Wildblood world kept hidden, the stories yet to be told.

A generation after World War 3, children of the survivors struggle to overcome the all-too-human penchant to fight with each other. The only thing more dangerous than the people you don’t know, are the people you do know.

The first book explores Capt. Shannon Allen and Capt. Damon Green’s efforts to uncover the truth about The Vista and its Altered, the genetically engineer humans, while remaining loyal to the oaths they swore to protect their home. The Vista is no longer alone, and the world is a complicated place.

This novel is a segue between The Wildblood: Trilogy One and the new stand-alone Outliers novels.

As we skip forward a bit, we find Hunter and Shannon discussing his family ties, and growing concerns about things the Council has been hiding for years.

 * * * * *

It doesn’t hurt to have powerful allies,” Hunter smiled.

Or any allies, as long as you can trust them,” Shan agreed.

I think you can trust him.”

You do, so I do; my concern now, is the people I’ve known all my life that have been lying to me, all my life.  Half the Council members from when this thing with Vance started are dead, two of them are over seventy, two of them are in Command, and one is still on the Council. That leaves me in a precarious position.”

Are any of them Altered?” Hunter understood her concern, and he’d be damned if he let them hurt her.

I used to think I’d know, now I’m not so certain.”

Shit,” he exhaled

I’m not on my own here, so don’t go out of your way to worry, because they’re more concerned about establishing relations with Estes Park and other cities, than what I might be up to on my own.”

More mystery, more intrigue.  More explosions?  Could be.  For now, the one that started this journey, The Vista, is on sale for some promos I had this month.  Good news for you, if you’d like to crack open this series – it’s 99c for the rest of September!  You know what to do.  If you don’t do Amazon, go to my website for all the other retailers.

A continuation of the chapter from last week.  Shannon and Green have had a complicated  relationship since they met while working in Security.     While many things have changed, they are still complicated.

 * * * * *

How’d it go in there?”

Like you’d expect; I told Richard Cameron all about Wade.”

Green made a noise, disgruntled, knowing he didn’t really have the right to tell her she couldn’t.

I looked around at all the men staring at me, and Perro said ‘He’s the only one that doesn’t know’ – he was right. When did we get so afraid of our families that we had to lie about most of our lives to them?” she held his hand, relishing the human contact.

You’re not afraid of them, you’re afraid for them. Have dinner with me, and I’ll drive you out to the airport,” Green changed the subject. “Otherwise, you can hitchhike on an empty stomach and I’ll come see you at the hospital tomorrow,” he smiled at her, daring her to argue.

Fair enough, Capt. Blackmail, buy me dinner.”

Green broke out in a real smile, “I love it when you’re reasonable.”

This will be a book sometime.  I’ve heard December is a bad month to release a book, so there’s that.  I’ll let you know, when I know.  Please forgive my creative punctuation.

The Vista is 99c for the month of September, FYI!  If you don’t use Kindle, there are other retailers here.

Another week, another 10 sentences.  Seems about my speed of writing lately.  Weirdly enough, there are 3 stories floating around waiting to get typed out.  Watching Carnival Row has made me want to write a story about the fae, too.  I know nothing about them, and if a real plotline starts, I’m afraid I’ll be in for weeks of research.  That’s how I roll.  (PS – my kids told me to never say that again.  It’s not cool.)

Oh, heck!  Check out the WeWriWa page (follow the graphic)!  There are always entertaining snippets to be found.  Snippet Sunday too.  Here’s the C&P blurb.  I need to write a real one, but those are just hideous to deal with.  So, this.

 * * * * *

This is a bit from a WIP Wildblood book yet to be named.  It follows after the trilogy, but is a stand alone novel.

The Gen En Shannon Allen, has sworn to protect her home.  After recent tragedies, she is more determined than ever to discover the secrets kept from her all her life.  Her kind, the genetically enhanced, the Altered, are being hunted, they have been since World War Last.  Venturing out into the post-apocalyptic world is dangerous.  Ignoring the truth about the Altered could be deadly.

Shannon is have a discussion, off the record, with her superior officers, determined not to show her human side, not to let them pull up tell-tale emotions.

* * * * *

Did you kill Vance?” Haines asked bluntly.

No.”

Did Cmdr. Wade?”

Has it occurred to you, the same group that ambushed us might have been fleeing Estes Park for a reason – Vance being that reason?” Shan put to them.

And you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?” Cameron added. He didn’t want to think Wade might have done it, but he knew it was possible.

It wouldn’t be the first time,” she said.

You’re very nonchalant about this, Capt. Allen,” Haines pointed out.

It’s actually the opposite of that, Chairman Haines. Six days ago, everything in my world stopped.”

 * * * * *

So, there it is.  Working title is Outliers: A Wildblood Novel(la?).  The stories between the other stories.  It might get another name, or a number later, I’ll worry about that when it’s time to find an editor.  At the front of the line, right now; Tau Scorpii is here, and Cascadia.  Plus, if you see someone sneaking around Pinterest looking at fae art, it’s not me!

A promo.  The Vista is on sale this month.  I may actually get to move this year, so there is no set timeline now.  This is my life.  No set schedule.  I don’t mind.

It’s late, I must get this online.

Summary – Tau Scorpii

When Taryn rescues another human from a marauding band of Caerule, she is reunited with clansmen from her past. It puts her at odds with their new chieftan, as well as her own partner, a powerful privateer. They discover, there are more imminent problems, ones they cannot control, and must unite to survive. Easier said than done, when each of them are strong-willed, intense, and have their own plans to set in motion.

Sedna is home to hundreds predatory alien species. Humans are one of them. They’ve been there long enough to adapt, but not so long that all of them have forgotten, it’s not their world. The weather is changing. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This snippet is Taryn and Skye, about to have a fight.  He wants to scare her in to going home, fearing she’ll get caught in the middle of a fight she knows nothing about.  Problem is, Taryn does scare easily.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Out here, it’s different than following Asher around his Keep, watching for trouble.”

It is,” Skye agreed, not wanting to get confrontational. It was the only way to make her stay away – from Garrett, and from him. “Playing in the Keep is nothing like a real battle, with swords, and blood, and death, don’t pretend to think it is.”

Taryn blinked, surprised.

You draw pretty pictures and study books that might not mean a thing. You cross the Carule and say ‘don’t draw weapons’,” he went on, a knot in the pit of his stomach. “You don’t belong out here, looking for lost cities, or facing warriors that aren’t afraid of you because of who Asher is. Go back to Argent with the stewards, before you get hurt, or before you get someone else hurt.”

I’m hoping to have a release date figured out soon for Tau Scorpii.

I have a stand-alone Wildblood novel happening, and the box set from the first trilogy is available now as an ebook.  Individual ones as ebook, and paperback.  Just click the pic to go to my webpage!

OK, I’m here.  Things are still as unsettled as before.  It’s neither good news or bad, it just is.  Two notes about that – 1.) Now I remember why I don’t eat breakfast.  It messes my system up for days.  2.)  I-25 south of Albuquerque?  You go up the hill, you go down the hill.  You go up the hill, you go down the hill.  Repeat about 90 times until you get to Las Cruces.  Also, it’s 100 degrees out.

This is a new snippet, something I’m playing with right now.  When the next (yes, next) Wildblood book comes out, I want it to be a standalone.  It will take a bit more planning on my part, but I don’t mind.

Here, Shannon is waking from a self-induced coma.  I won’t spoil the trilogy, but this book will examine relationships hinted at and skimmed over previously, personal ones and public things.  Please forgive my interesting punctuation.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Being exhausted and weak, she couldn’t hold on to the memory. As it faded, she remembered the gunfire, and felt wounds; some hers, some not, some old, some fresh; it was a relief, to wake from it.

Faint light from an oil lamp illuminated part of the room and a lone figure sat waiting, immersed in the pages of an old book. “Awake now?” he inquired quietly. Damon Green, colleague, friend, and more, he was one of the few people she trusted.

Yeah, now,” Shan agreed, not recognizing the room, “What day is it?”

Tuesday.”

She considered it, knowing Saturday afternoon was the last clear memory she had, “Ranchlands?”

You don’t think I’d let them keep you in The Vista unless it was an absolute emergency, do you?” he asked, setting the book aside. The Ranchlands was his home, a centuries-old sovereign Siksika Nation, the Blackfoot nation that had existed long before, and now after, what had been the United States.

Another Saturday night, another post.  Writing is progressing, although there are three projects bouncing around.  I’m still pushing for Tau Scorpii to be the next release, and currently, it’s in the lead.

Check out WeWriWa & Snippet Sunday if you like reading these intriguing bits of works in progress.  I’ve discovered so fantastic authors here.  My Kindle is happy.

It’s already crazy hot here in the desert, and we’ve had two haboobs in two weeks.  I hope that’s not a pattern.  I like to be able to breathe.  “Move to the desert”, they said.  “It’ll be soooo nice in the winter.”  Right.  We will not discuss June, July & August.

No wonder I’m writing a book about being trapped in the desert, and trying to find a way out.  Luckily for me, the Rocky Mountains are 30 minutes away.  I need a vacation.  Maybe I’ll get one this year.  Wish me luck, good luck,  I’m going to need it the next few weeks.

Garrett and Ianto are discussing their current dilemma, that the hierarchy of their clan is splintering and a newcomer is making the division happen faster, intentionally or not.  While they are concerned, they also find it amusing, that Skye, a devout bachelor, is firmly confused, frustrated, and intimidated by the situation.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You aren’t worried about Taryn?” Garrett had to ask, he’d been wanting to for days.

I’m worried because it’s Taryn,” Ianto said.

She’s as capable as any of my warriors, including you, and including him.”

I have no doubt, I’m still surprised by the fact of who she is. Skye has always blamed himself for what happened, even if it’s baseless.”

Guilt has no reason to it.”

He might overcompensate for it, now – infatuated, interested, it’s there, we’ve both seen it, and it looks mutual.”

It does, and if it is, they’ll figure it out, so what’s your worry?”

You, and him, are plotting to replace me, with her,” Ianto kept a straight face a few moments, before riding off towards the caravan.

She’s a damned sight better to stare at all day, it can be arranged,” Garrett called after him.

In Real World News – Did you catch that amazing first photo of an actual Black Hole?  I won’t post it because I’m not certain about NASA & copyright infringement, but a search on the interweb will get you a million places to see the same picture.  The Falcon 9 launch Thursday (Apr 11) was also a sight to see.  All three booster rockets returned in a perfect sequence.  It was beautiful.  I love live tv feeds.

Meanwhile, in the world of Tau Scorpii, my intrepid characters are making progress of their own.  They’ve put aside their problems and ventured from the Near Desert to . . .  well, the uncharted desert.  It’s progress, I swear.  They aren’t trying to kill each other, right now, either.  I told you, progress.

Except I never make things easy on my characters.  Big things are about to happen, but they have time for a break in their routine, a little relaxation, a little fun.

When Taryn rescues another human from a marauding band of Caeruleum, she is reunited with clansmen long believed dead. It puts her at odds with their new chieftan, as well as her own partner, a powerful privateer. They discover, they have a more imminent problem, and must unite to survive.

The weather is changing. They’ll have to fight other species for control as migrations begin, food becomes scarce, and border wars erupt across the territories. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

Tau Scorpii A, a massive red giant star in a binary cluster with Tau Scorpii B, a yellow dwarf. The solar system is populated by more than thirty planets, at least one habitable. Called Sedna by the SolTerrans that live there, named for a planet in their ancestral system. The desert is a dangerous place for alien species – and on Sedna, they’re all alien species.

“If the time comes when there is trouble out here, you should know, Skye will try to protect you; personally, I think he’s crazy, but he will try,” Garrett told her.

“Would it do any good for me to talk to him?” Taryn wondered.

He chuckled, “No, like I said, he’s not big on talking.”

“What can I do?”

“Be careful.”

“I thought I’d race across the desert, waving a Tycho Alles banner, shouting my name, just to see if anyone noticed.”

“Naked,” Garrett said, “to be sure.”

Taryn blinked, speechless, usually having the upper hand, when dealing with warriors.

“That would make things more interesting, and I have a plan, to make things more interesting.”

“I’m not driving naked, anywhere,” Taryn pointed out quickly, getting a raucous laugh from him; she wasn’t amused.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I apologize for the interesting punctuation there.  My release date timetable is still a mystery.  I will hopefully have a better idea what my plans are for the next few month, by the first week of May.  It’s a bit scary, moving now.  Its been 15 years since the last one.  I’m sure I have a lot of stuff to throw out, and I’m just as sure, this is going to kick me hard.  It will be a good thing, tho.  The countdown is on.

Bloodlines is on 99c sale for a few weeks.  It’s third 3rd and final installation in this story arc of The Wildblood.  Yes, that means there will be more, standalone novels if I have my way with these characters.  You can find all the current books on my website.

All my MCs are gathered, talking about why they shouldn’t go out into the desert.  Asher tells them why they should.  Please keep in mind, this is a first draft.  I’ll make it pretty & shiny, later on.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Our city wasn’t the first one there. There were others, ancient ones, alien ones. There is the chance, whoever they were knew many things about Sedna, about the way the seasons change,” Asher revealed.  “The adults even considered, that they were native to the planet, and it was dying. They brought other species here to reseed it. Pure speculation, but if there’s a chance, we need to know. If the desert becomes an ocean, a real ocean, we have to deal with it while we still can. That means I have a city to move, through hostile places.”

All while avoiding the Caerule,” Garrett said.

And a dozen other vicious species that would hunt us to extinction, if we were that vulnerable,” Taryn added.

This is a bit later on during the conversation I posted last week.  Taryn doesn’t have to get the last word in, but she certainly has some words.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I’m not stupid, of course I don’t want to be in charge,” Taryn said. “You both have years more experience, in the desert, in wars, in dealing with other clans. I’m going because I’m the fresh eyes and ideas you need, to figure out all the new things happening here. If you want my opinion, I’ll be out watching the star-rise; let me know what you decide to do.” With a cocky nod of her head, she strode out of the library.

She just called us old,” Garrett said after a few moments. “But she does have a point.”

Always,” Asher said. “You need to take her south, you need to listen to her. To clarify, do not let her provoke you into something you know you shouldn’t be doing – remind her how old and wise you are.”

My move is getting closer, maybe as soon as 4 weeks.  Maybe not.  For now, I’m doing promos for Bloodlines, and The Wildblood series.  If you’re interested in the post-apocalyptic type,  this story arc is complete.  I’m pretty excited about it.

I’ll start in on Tau Scorpii promos as soon as my plans are a little more set, and I get a better idea when a release date is.
