The WildbloodNo one remembers what started the war, the big one. Civilization stopped, and what came next was fueled by rage and fear.

Twenty years on, a tiny refuge, a place called The Vista, may be one of the last vestiges of humanity. Isolated, guarded, and hiding a dark secret, the people have survived World War Last, and they are content with that. Their children, however, are not. The search for others will send them out into a world they know nothing about, where the line between enemy and ally is blurred.

Excerpt (Backlash: Prequel to The WIldblood)

“Shannon,” her radio crackled static, snapping her out of a restless sleep. It was Wade on his private channel.

“Go ahead,” she answered groggily. Her watch read 9:30 pm and she was supposed to go on duty at 2:00 am. An hour – she’d been asleep an hour.

“Gear up. I’ll be there in five minutes to get you.”

“What’s going on?” she wondered, rubbing her eyes.

“Don’t ask, just do.”

He didn’t sound like they might be playing wargames. Shan moved.

Her mother was in the kitchen. Deirdre Allen was five foot three, with pale blond hair, hazel eyes, and was one of The Vista’s actual doctors. She’d been twenty-nine when civilization ended. “The hospital just called me in,” she announced. “Are you on-call?”

“I am now. Wade didn’t tell me why.”

“War games?”

“No,” Shan told her. “Not this time. I know you don’t like carrying, but I think this is serious. Take a sidearm, Mom, please.”

Deirdre nodded. “For your peace of mind I will.” She knew how to use it; she’d been forced to in the past and hoped she never would again. “Whatever it is, be careful.”

“I am, and Wade wouldn’t let me get away with anything else.”

She hugged her. “I mean it.”

“I’ll see you in the morning,” Shan said, hearing a car. “That’s Wade. If he tells me it’s practice, I’ll let you know.” She didn’t think it was likely, but he’d fooled her before.

The moment she dropped into the passenger seat, she knew it was real. “Can you tell me now?” She’d dressed in winter camos with body armor, both Sigs and a boot gun, clips in all her pockets, plus an array of knives. Her pack held spare ammo, food rations and various bits of survival equipment.

He glanced sideways at her, heading towards Station Two with a purpose. “We lost a Scout at Wisdom about an hour ago.”

“Lost?” she repeated, not expecting it.

WeWriWa 10/21/18

WeWriWa – check it out.  There’s a great group of authors sharing their snippets and insights into the writing process.  Be afraid!  And Snippet Sunday on Facebook is awesome, too, stop on by.

Blurb – Tau Scorpii

When Taryn rescues another human from a marauding band of Caeruleum, she is reunited with clansmen long believed dead. It puts her at odds with their new chieftan, as well as her own partner, a powerful privateer. They discover, they have a more imminent problem, and must unite to survive.

The weather is changing. They’ll have to fight other species for control as migrations begin, food becomes scarce, and border wars erupt across the territories. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain.

Tau Scorpii A, a massive red giant star in a binary cluster with Tau Scorpii B, a yellow dwarf. The solar system is populated by more than thirty planets, at least one habitable. Called Sedna by the SolTerrans that live there, named for a planet in their ancestral system. The desert is a dangerous place for alien species – and on Sedna, they’re all alien species.

I hate to reuse a snippet, but I’m writing ‘The Scene’ in Bloodlines, and things have been pretty hectic here this week.  Everything is ok, just crazy busy.   So, I leave you with my favorite scene in Tau Scorpii (so far).  It’s on deck now, due out early next year.  Take a peek.

Taryn and Skye knew each other when she was a child and he was a warrior in her clan, but than was quite a few years ago.  Things have changed, and they’re both coming to terms with that.  It’s not going to be easy, or simple for them, that’s not how my characters go.  Skye feels guilt over events of the past.  Taryn has other feelings, about current events.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“Say that again,” he challenged, cutting in front of her to make her stop, leaning close to make it private.

She didn’t waver,“Let it go, there’s nothing you can do to change it.” Then she fiddled with the collar of his dusty jacket, pretending to brush it off. Neither of them even blinked. Taryn pulled him forward and kissed him, brushing her lips over his for a few lingering moments. “I know you were a good man, show me who you are now.”

“You might not like who I am now.”

“I was going to say the same thing. I’m not your princess,” Taryn used a childhood fairy tale to make her point.

Skye had been read the same stories when he was young, “I’m not your knight in shining armor.”

Yep, they have issues.  Pretty soon, those are going to multiple, but that’s how it goes, right?  Up next, the weekly batch of promos.

Backlash is currently free!

You can find the rest of the series here, and other retailers for Backlash as well.

And a preview of Tau Scorpii Book 1.

#8Sunday 02/05/17 WeWriWa

Ha!  I made it.  My work week changed and it messed up my schedule.  But I have a few words.  Apparently, I’m going to write Books 3 & 4 of The Wildblood at the same time.   Should be interesting.

Check out the WeWriWa blog for a whole list of authors offering their tasty snippets.

This particular set of words are from Book 3.  Hopefully, titles will be happening soon, as well.  This is Wade, giving excuses why he’s about to disappear into the scenery.  Of course, he has ulterior motives.

Team Three is still a team, but I can’t stay here, now. It makes it easier for Altereds to find us. I’m not making it easy for them, ever again.” He spoke of the modified humans covertly created during the past century. The Altered had developed unusual talents, far beyond anything anticipated.  Before the war ended their civilization, the entities that made them attempted to correct the aberrations. Those attempts had been largely unsuccessful.

The simple fact was, Team Three were the Altered, too.

Hmmm, must promo while I’m here.  Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood needs some love.  Important things happening for my characters here.  Check it out in eBook formats and paperbacks at or the picture takes you right to Amazon.

OK, my stuff.  My characters don’t get much private time, and when they do, things can get interesting.  Shannon and Hunter get a brief respite from their routine.  They’ve been contemplating a change in their relationship for months.  Of course, nothing is ever simple.

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“You don’t owe me an explanation, Hunter. We’re different, we’re always going to be different, and the choices we make sometimes hurt.”

I was going to say, I’ve thought about it, and I don’t just give up and walk away.”

She didn’t understand, a brief shrug indicating he’d lost her. “You didn’t have to stay here with me, you know, the other side of the duplex is ten feet away.”

When we were all back in Cody, I told Mac I wouldn’t add complications to your life, until we’d taken care of the problem. It surprised me when you showed up here unannounced. The point is, if you’re willing, I’m willing – let’s see where this goes.”

Are we talking about sex?”

I am.”

The good news is – Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood is available for pre-order at Amazon, and will be released on Oct. 20.  Of this year!  Other ebook formats will be available the same day, and a paperback edition as soon as I can manage to deal with the formatting.  Reserve one now, if you’d like.

Other books in the series can be found at my website –

And It’s Sunday

I missed my weekend post, having gotten my hands on the next-to-the-last edit of Renegades.  So, if anyone is interested in helping me launch this baby, email me. Blog posts, Twitter posts, FB, you know what I mean. If you’d be interested in reviewing either The Vista or Renegades, let me know and I can send you an eArc. They are books 1 & 2 of a post-apocalyptic, action-adventure series.

Marketing is still a mystery to me. Helpful suggestions are always appreciated!

I’m also kicking my newsletter into gear. If you’re interested. I won’t resort to bribery, not yet. 😉

Have a peaceful, productive weekend. I should be back next week with a snippet. From which book, that remains to be seen.

9/11/16 WeWriWa

And that’s the blog you want to visit for a whole batch of exciting and diverse snippets.

Sorry I’ve been absent.  Between Real Life, formatting, and editing, I’ve run out of summer.  Here’s my snippet, then more news about my projects. This is a scene between Wade and Vance, protagonist and antagonist, and they both know there’s nothing they can do about being adversaries.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You’re leaving her, in my city, in charge of a military force? A teenage girl? I’ve seen her throwing what amounts to temper tantrums, when she doesn’t get her way.”

Smug with himself, Wade told him, “She’s twenty, now. When she gets her mind set in an idea, she makes sure I know it. Shan is just like me, she knows what she’s doing. You don’t have to approve, but she’s my senior officer here.”

Not ‘just like you’,” Vance pointed out. “We both know that.”

Wade shrugged off the ominous comment.

Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood is in its final edits and should be available in a few weeks.  Yay me!

In other series news, Backlash and The Vista are both available in paperback now, as well as ebook formats.  So is Hunter’s Moon.

I have a new sci-fi started.  It’s a apocalypse/time travel/dimensional travel thing just in rough draft.  It’s a great idea, I just have to put it down in words.  This one is going to be a bit more graphic in adult content.

I think that’s it.  Follow the graphic to my website for links to everything that’s available.

Here Again

I’ve been horrible at keeping up on social media the past few weeks.  Editing is occupying all my waking moments.  The good news is, Renegades will be released soon.  Autumn, this year.  The other good news is – The Wildblood series is going to print!

Wooo!  I actually have a copy – a real, live paperback – of Backlash.  It’s so cool.  It’s also available through Amazon.  The Vista will be following along shortly, and of course, Renegades.

As for other projects, there is a SFR creeping around the corner, demanding I let it out.  More on that, as it moves along.

I’ve also been playing with the idea of novellas in The Wildblood universe.  There are so many stories.  We’ll see.

That’s it.  I have to hit the books again.  Plus, go pet my shiny new paperback.

WeWriWa 07/17/16

My 8 -10 from Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood.  Sometimes, you really can’t avoid trouble, as my MCs are about to find out.  They have to answer for their escapades of the past year.

Renegades will be available in Sept./Oct., 2016, so this is the last snippet of this book.  Book 3 is looming, plus an entirely new project.  More on that later.

Maybe it would be better to excuse the rest of the team,” Duncan suggested.

Exactly – we’re a team,” Shan protested. “We want to stay, we have a right to know what Command is doing.”

It wasn’t a request,” Duncan came right back.

I don’t care. This isn’t right.”

One minute,” Wade told them, grabbing her by the forearm and leading her to the back of the room. Mac stood there, coolly regarding the Command officers.

This is bullshit. It’s as much of an ambush as what happened at The Junction in July,” she whispered to him vehemently.

SFRB Showcase July 2016!

The banner takes you right to the place to find all kinds of amazing authors and their offerings for July.  Check it out.  Not only are they talented writers, they’ve gotten me through a lots of bumps in the road to publishing, and surviving after publishing.

On to a snippet.  I’ve rewritten this scene a few times, and while I can’t guarantee it’s done being tweaked, I think it is.  So for something completely different, I’m going to post the snippet, with my personal thoughts interjected in parenthesis.  This is really how my brain works.  you’ve been warned.

Hunter and Shannon have a reunion, about halfway through Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood.  Read the bold lines first, that’s the actual snippet.  Reread.  My smarmy comments are in italics.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You’re not wearing body armor,” Hunter observed.

(Did you really think he wouldn’t notice that??)

She glared at him, dropping her canteen and clamping her mouth shut instead of saying something rude.

(You’re so lucky she didn’t punch you.  She’s twenty, for god’s sake.  Her hormones are running amok.)

He knew that look. “And you’re pissed at me. Because I kissed you?”

(I was right, you really are clueless.)

For a moment, Shan was astonished. “You think that’s why I’m angry?” She put her hands on her hips, only accentuating the fact she was mad, and that she wasn’t wearing body armor.

Apparently, no. What did I do wrong?” Hunter asked, leery.

(Oh, Hunter, you silly, silly man.)

You could have asked me to come with you, when you left Estes Park.”

(You’re not paying enough attention, Hunter.  You should run now.)

You told me not to.”

(See previous statement.)

I might have alluded to it. The point is, you should have asked.” Shan was frustrated. He wasn’t like the other men she knew, the ones she’d grown up around. She had no trouble expressing herself to the select few of Team Three’s inner circle, or talking them in to things.

There was no winning the argument, he knew from past experience. “What about Mac?” he expressed his own frustration.

(Noooooooooo!!  You did not just say that!)

Mac?” she repeated, puzzled.

(It’s OK, Shan.  He’s clueless.)

Tall guy. Wears a cowboy hat, watches a lot of old movies when he’s off-duty. You two are . . . involved.”

(I’ll bet she knew that.)

She sighed. “I forget, sometimes. You think my relationship with Mac has some bearing on my relationship with you. It doesn’t.”

Maybe not for you,” Hunter corrected. “And maybe not for him. I have trouble working around that. Once I figure it out, I’ll tell you all about how I feel.” He knew exactly how to push her buttons, or to make her think about it. His choice was the latter, this time.

I don’t even know how to respond,” Shan decided after a moment.

(Me, either.)

What do you need my help for?” he changed the subject none too smoothly.

I’m a Scout, I might as well see what I can about this trade route. Maybe it will keep Command from firing me, later.”

(looks for another cup of coffee)

Hunter folded his arms, never sure if she was joking when it came to Command.

(You know nothing, Hunter.  Nothing!)

There are times I really despise that . . . smug look,” she folded her arms, daring him to respond.

(You’re really not going to let him walk away like that, are you?  ARE YOU??)

Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood will be release this autumn.  In the meantime, you can catch up with The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood, and Backlash, a prequel novella.  They are available on all e-formats, links on my website.

Early Promo for Renegades

So I took the time to get a promo blurb finished.  I’m certain it will evolve over the next few months, but here it is.  As I’m editing (shudder!), I’m also thinking a release date in August.  2016.  I’ll set a firm date once I weed my way through it.  Blurb ahead.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Renegades: Book 2 of The Wildblood takes up soon after The Vista: Book 1 of The Wildblood concluded, with Team Three not at all convinced the search for the truth about themselves is over.

Protecting their home, an isolated northern stronghold known as The Vista, has been the first duty of Team Three. They scatter across the Front Range of a post-apocalyptic North America, in an attempt to determine where their enemies are hidden and if they have any true allies.

Out among clans of the Altered, and cities where civilization has held ground, their efforts to establish The Vista’s domain create unique conflicts and unexpected help. The most pressing obstacle turns out to be their own governing councils, a threat as real and dangerous as the nomads of the outlands.

It’s rumored that Team Three has gone renegade. With Wade in Colorado, Shannon in parts unknown, and Mac running Cody outside of The Vista’s jurisdiction, it looks like it’s possible.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

If you’d like to catch up on the series, it’s pretty easy – one novella and one novel.  Links, of course.  Thanks for stopping by.
